what Benchrest you using?

i had been using homemade sandbags. some were bluejean legs filled with lightweight filler. one set is cutoff pieces of rubber inner tube filled with sand. all of those work fine but i recently bought a Caldwell handgun rest from midwayusa. it's easily adjustable and lightweight. i've only used it once, but like it so far.  :sniper:

Kyode - I've been using a Hoppes tripod front rest with a suede leather rear bag half filled with lead shot and half with old kidney beans!  Gives a nice balance of steadiness and portability.  Use it for everything ... rifles and T/C's ... and it has worked fine for me.

I have a question for you, though.  I just threw away 6 pairs of OLD jeans that had been accumulating in my closet and I cut all the legs off at the knees before they went in the trash.  But I don't know what to fill them with.  The obvious choice is sand, but I'd like to try some with "light weight filler".  What has worked for you?

I got a Lohman Sight vise but once I got my VVCG stock set for my encore I started using a bipod which I like better...

I fill the cutoff pant legs with cat litter.  It's lighter than sand.  I recommend you use new litter, not out of the cat box

I uesd old tumbling media in a hoppis leather benchrest bag. it worked very well and was light weight.

i have used that bag so much that it finaly gave way so i got some old shot bags and filled them with sand and us it inplace of the hoppies benchrest bag. it works great.

as i said i use the hoppies benchrest for everything and it works grerat
i painted it black so i can take it hunting with me and not have it stand out as much

I generally use a Bower Rest System for most things. Occasionally I'll use a Bald Eagle with a sand bag for the rear rest. The Bower is a more steady setup, but I'm working on a wood block with emery paper to fit the Bald Eagle along with a 4x4 block for the rear with the emery cloth.

crayfish, these fellers gave some good lightweight filler ideas. another i've heard is filling the bags with rice. what i've used, i got at work. i work in a plastics plant. i had finely ground plastic and filled the bags with that. :grin:

Hi all,

I picked up an Outers Rifle rest with a Pistol Perch attachment last fall. I have only used it once since to sight in a Contender barrel. It seems to work better than anything else I've tried for handguns so far. I haven't tried a rifle on it yet.

I had a inexpensive Lohman Gun Vise that was OK for rifles but even once it was locked into the vise, the whole thing could still move.

I have used old tumbling media also to fill cloth shot bags and some of those leather shooting bags. The cat litter or speedy dry sounds like a good solution too.

Thanks for the tips, Guys!!  Since we're not exactly "cat lovers", the wife is going to wonder what I'm doing bringing home kitty litter!!  Maybe I'll try to find some speedy dry instead ... a little more "manly"!
