Kemper Military Academy

The Kemper Military Academy in Boonville, MO, goes on the auction block in April.  Anybody interested in cannons might want to look into this because they have some historical pieces that will be sold.

I just looked at the map - looks like Booneville would be easy to get to - right off the interstate.  About a day and a half from here in Virginia.

I would think that some of the folks that haunt the n-ssa site would be interested as well.

Thanks!

I thought that Kemper sold off their cannon several years ago.

There are two photos of the cannons in the PDF that Intodeep posted, and this is the description given of the two guns that are up for auction:
WATERVLIET ARSENAL Horse Drawn Cannon, 1893, 1207 pounds, # 7, W.S.P., 3 1/2” bore, 57
1/2” Wheel diameter Wood Spoke Wheels, Iron Rims - 2 13/16" wide, Hand Wheel Scissor Jack
Barrel Elevation Mechanism
WATERVLIET ARSENAL Horse Drawn Cannon, 1894, 1202 pounds, #18, S.E.B., 3 1/2” bore, 53”
diameter Wood Spoke Wheels, Iron Rims - 4 3/16" wide, Hand Wheel Scissor Jack Barrel Elevation Mechanism

The two cannons are 3.6-inch Breech loading Rifles, and can be seen on p.127 of this Google digital book. These rifles are basically just larger versions of the 3.2-inch BL Field Rifle Model of 1890, and the bigger bore gun used the same carriage as the 3.2-inch rifle. A drawing of the "lazy tongs" elevating device (described as "Hand Wheel Scissor Jack Barrel Elevation Mechanism" in the PDF) is shown on p.111, fig. 34.

I always liked that gun, there is one up in NY near where I lived
it was rotting away in a traffic island I started making inquiries to
find out what group owned it once interest was shown in it they
decided to have new wheels made and restore it..... I may not have
been able to get it but at least it got restored.......

I wish I could afford to bid on one of these....
Mr president I do not cling to either my gun or my Bible.... my gun is holstered on my side so I may carry my Bible and quote from it!

The heck with buying just one. Buy the whole school and contents. Looks like a great place to shoot cannons. You could tow the cannons around with one of the jeeps in the auction.   ;D

In reality, there's the possibility that come the day of the auction there might be a face in the audience that we'd recognize. The photo of one of the guns seen at the end of the document that Intoodeep posted shows a tube and carriage that seem to be in pretty good condition for a cannon displayed outdoors. The wooden spokes of the wheels don't give the impression that any proactive maintenance has been being carried out in recent times, but it sounds by the description of one of the cannons that the carriage still has its original 57 3/4-inch diam. wheels, while the other carriage's wheels have been replaced with some smaller diameter, but wider substitutes.

Well, yuk yuk yuk, that was one good gag, but what the heck; while it's now highly probable ;) that it would be pointless to attend the auction on April 4th at 9:00 AM, I think it was well worth the effort travelling back in time to revisit, and comment upon some examples of historic American ordnance.:D
