A New Big Bore..............
« on: May 17, 2005, 09:28:43 AM »
I was just wondering is anyone planning on purchasing/building/acquiring a new big bore?  I am thinking about building another bolt action .450 Marlin on a Weatherby Mark V action I traded for a few weeks ago.  Lawdog

Lawdog,

That ought to be a power house if you do put it togather. No problem with pressure, Be like a mini 458. I would like to see how it turned out because i have Mark five action and was trying to figger out what i was going to make. With a 24" barrel it should haul the mail. If you do go this way please let me know how it turned out...........Joe...........

Funny you should ask, I have been looking at and pricing the CZ 550 and the Ruger M77 both in 458 Lott for the past few weeks....

Would love to build a 45/70 in a bolt gun but...... I have way too many things going on right now to do it.

Have a Pdog shoot coming up and I'm scrambling to get everything done for that.

Just started load work on my 7.62X54R Mosan M44......that is a 2 year old project that really needs to get finished.

That 54R might do what I wanted a 45/70 to do any way.
Heavy brush deer and hog gun. 100 yard Max shooting range but compact. Barrel 18-20" Max.

If I was to get 45/70 it would shoot 500-560gr. cast bullets at around 1500fps Max. So if one should happen to fall into my hands at the right cost? Ya I would get it. But I'm not going to dig one up.

I already have a Win. M70 .450 Marlin that I built but my brother in-law is bugging me to sell it to him.  The Mark V action I got was chambered for the .257 Weatherby so the action won't be too long for the .450 Marlin when loaded with longer spitzer type bullets(my loads for the .450 call for a over all length of 3.1" with 500 gr. Barnes bullets).  If you are interested in some load data send me a PM and I'll be glad to get them to you.  Lawdog

What make/model .416 Rigby did you get?  Mine is a Ruger M77 Magnum.  Excellent rifle/cartridge combination and it really gets everyones attention when at the range.  Most want to take a turn shooting it.  Lawdog

Lawdog, I got the Encore barrel for my Encore.  It is a 26 inch heavy barrel with a muzzle break on it. I drilled the stock and put a mercury recoil suppresser in it and added a sim's recoil pad. I topped it off with a Leupold VXII 1-4x20mm.  The recoil is tamed to less than my Tikka 300 Win Mag without a muzzle break. I know it is not a bold action or a double, but it will get the job done.  I found a very accurate load for it also. I am using 106 gr. of Reloader22 under a Barnes X 300 gr. bullet and Federal 215M primers and Norma brass.  It don't take long to burn up a pound of powder.  :D

The only big bore project I am working on right now is my 450 # 2 Nitro Express.   It is a double based on a French action, it weighs 12.5 pounds and is ready to be regulated.   I made the stock from Black Thorn, the blank was given to me by a South African custom gunsmith when we were there back in 2001.

Lawdog, I have been following this and your other thread on the medium bore forum rather closely for some new ideas. So I have to ask, why build a .450 Marlin on a standard length action? Why not just go with the .458 Win. Mag.? I'm asking because the idea of a bolt action .450 Marlin sounds intriguing, but seems like it is better suited to 400 grain bullets and a short action. I have a Win model 70 in .300 mag I bought for the action, and don't know what I'm going to do with it yet. I just know it's either going to be smaller than .30 caliber, or bigger than .375!

Ramrod,

The main reason is I am getting my best accuracy with the 450 gr. Barnes TSX loaded so the C.O.L. measures 3.09", which is a bit long for the magazines on short length actions.  The reason for the .450 Marlin over the .458 Win. Mag. was I became intrigued with the .450 Marlin when it first came out.  Case is a bit thicker/stronger than the .45/70(according to the technicians at Hornady who really designed the cartridge along with the technicians at Marlin) and better suited for bolt actions rifles.  I wasn’t looking for an Elephant rifle, just a big bore suited for anything that walks the North America Continent.  The .450 Marlin fits this requirement very nicely.  My brother in-law used my Min. M70 a couple of years ago to take his last Coastal Brown Bear and it performed better than expected.  At 130 yards the first shot put the old boy down and the second stopped all movement.  Any help I can give you on building a bolt action .450 Marlin just send me a PM and I’ll help all I can.  Lawdog

Lawdog, thanks for the offer. If I did a .450 Marlin, it would used as a brush gun, more like a .45-70 than a .458 Win. A 400 grain flat or round nose softpoint would be all I need. I'm just not sure I need to use the long action for something like this. I'm in no hurry to get started, though.
