A Stevens 200 in 270 win is on layaway, it's primary job is deer/antelope (when I get a tag) it's secondary job is to be an emergency elk gun if my 338 is out of commission.  My next questions are 3-9 or 4-12 and what head do I start with 130 triple shock, 140 accubond or some standard construction 130 (sierra or honrady). I figuring H4831 is probably a good alround powder for 270 or maybe IMR 4350 (since I use it in my 338 loads).

I just ordered a sako 75 hunter in .270, it will wear a leupold vxII 3x9x40. After this one I better cool it for a while cause 2 months ago I got a pair of leica geovid  brf 10x42's. Suppose my kids have to eat at some point.

Seriously considering a 7x57 large ring Mauser bbl.
It'll probably sit locked away until the right action comes along.

I must be going through a masochistic phase, since my latest
rifle craving is for a .338 magnum.  At this point, I am not sure it
is a .338 Win. Mag, or a .338 RUM, but it is a .338 cal I am longing for.
If I could find a decent rifle in .338 RUM, the decision would be
easy, but I have a hard time buying Remington rifles these days.
I wish Savage, or Tikka, made a rifle chambered in .338 RUM.
I will probably settle for the .338 Win Mag, and end up with a
rifle I have more confidence in being accurate out of the box,
rather than gamble on a Remington, and have to go through
some accurizing costs/efforts, on top of initial price.  That is if
the rifle doesn't have any issues out of the factory...REMINGTON
ARE YOU LISTENING!

Oh well, I guess not.  So, now I need to locate a nice Tikka,
in .338 Win Mag.

:D I'm getting ready to buy a pre 64 Model 70 in .300 H&H from my boss. Just as soon as I get some more $$$$$ saved up. It's in mint condition and has only been fired a few times. He bought it in the 50's and had a Redfield post reticle scope mounted on it. He took it to the range sighted it in and went to Newfoundland to shoot a moose with it in 1959. He then placed it in his closet where it has sat for 46 years.
I just can't wait to get my hands on this piece of history. He said "it is ACCURATE wherever you put that post the bullet goes". I doubt I will even shoot it. Even though he says he wants me to use it, I will probably just display it and pass it along to my son when I get old and gray.
My boss is getting ready to retire and he said he wants me to have it because none of his kids hunt and he knows I will get a lot of use from it and take good care of it. He says I am the biggest hunter he has ever known. (COOL)

I'm sorta planning for one...

About 6 months ago, my wife and I ran across a deal on firearms - about $30 over wholesale.  She got a 20 ga. Browning BPS Micro, and she bought my graduation present at the same time.

I have a 7mm WSM Winchester Featherweight sitting at my house, never been fired.  Absolutely gorgeous wood on it too.  I installed a Leupold VXII 3X9 and a custom fit Simms Limbsaver recoil pad to it.  The catch is, I just can't bring myself to shoot it before I get my thesis done!

I look at the case it's in, and dream of the day when I have an Elk in my crosshairs.

Time to get back to work.  I want this thesis done by July!  Much more important things to do like shooting guns, building muzzleloaders, and enjoy our firstborn, due in December.

Way to go marylandeer. The perfect combination. The .300 H&H is perhaps the most versatile of the .300 Magnums (only possible exception is .300 Weatherby Mag, which will also shoot H&H ammo). Why? I'll tell you:

a)  It is the most efficient powder burner of all the .300's.

b)  It does not require a 26 inch long barrel as it uses less powder.

c)  The taper of the case body and the gentle shoulder makes it a smooth & reliable feeder.

d)  It is the least likely to have a sticky bolt problem when pressures get high on a hot day.

e)  Operating pressures are lower and therefore there is less strain on the gun and case life is better.

f)   Its long neck makes it easier to reload it with heavier bullets, like 200 & 220-grainers.

g)  Additional and unnecessary velocity of faster magnums is more destructive on the bullet.

h)  It has lower recoil than the faster magnums as velocity gets squared in the energy calculation.

i)   Longer barrel life by virtue of lower operating temperatures - throats get eroded.

j)   More versatile with the 220 grainer for shorter ranges like in the Bushveld.

And the M70 gets my vote too. Good on you!

:D Thanks Jimi, I didn't know all that. But I want it even more now.
Oh, I forgot to mention he is throwing in some OLD 180 grain Winchester silver tips to go with it. He said he bought a ton of it when he bought the rifle and still has it.

I have a 5 3/4 lb. .338 coming from Match Grade Arms in July. Win. mod 70 classic skeletonized action, #2 Pac-Nor match barrel, 20 oz. stock, trigger job set at 3#, and a muzzle brake. It is for a planned move to AK, so will also wear a fiber optic front sight and use Talley bases modified by Brockman with a pop-up peep sight in the rear base. Scope will be a leupold 1.5-4 in Talley QR bases. Barrel is a 10 twist to stabalize the 275 gr Swift A-frames and 300 gr Woodleighs.

Well a 300 mag is on the roster when the finances permit, a new larger safe can be obtained (somehow the old one got filled up, how'd that happen anyway?), and the Mrs is in a tolerant frame of mind when I come through the doorway carrying in the box.

No, got a Ruger .300 Win Mag for Christmas and a used Marlin .30-30 a month later.  till working up loads.

But when I get ready for my next rifle it will most likely be a .308 or a .338.   Hmmm.  Or maybe a .375...

I'm saving for a Weatherby Vanguard in .300 Wthby. On line for an early August purchase. That will still give me three and a half months of range time before hunting season.
As if you coulden't infer already, we be poor. So one gun is going to have to do it all including potential future (or fantasy) elk hunts. I'd love to go more expensive but I can't. So at roughly $389 what would be the opinions of my choice.
With faith, all is possible. Not easy, but possible.

Without further detail on which one you're exactly purchasing I'd have to say they are real bang for your buck.
That said which model are you buying.....the standard blued/synth? Stainless/synth? Fibreguard blued or stainless? Deluxe?
My particular preference is the blued Fibreguard with the tan Bell&Carlson stock.
If I had as much money as you(which gives you some idea how much money I haven't got  ) I'd be saving up for the blued Fibreguard in 270WSM. :P
Here in Oz they include Leupold mounts & rings for all models.
See if you can get some extras for yours.
