Now What???

Here in Colorado it's no longer legal to bait bears :roll: so I'm looking for other people's input on a hunting strategy without bait.  Short of watching berry patches and glassing hillsides, does anybody have any other non-bait strategies that have paid off?  

If we are blessed with getting an elk, I plan to hunt the gut pile (which is legal as long as it's not moved) the following days but short of that I'm kind of scratching my head on a strategy.

if its a dry year you could scout out water sources and set up on stand there.  can you still use scents in co.?

if so check out bearscents.com

they have a scent ball that i guess is just the thing.

My interpretation is scent sticks are OK as long as they don't smell like food.  Here's what the reg states:

"It's against the law to use dogs or bait to hunt bears.  Bait means to put, expose, deposit, distribute or scatter salt, minerals, grain, animal parts or other food as a lure, attraction or enticement.  Scent sticks that smell like food are illegal for bears."

So....I will call the DOW to clarify but I read it as long as the scent doesn't smell like food.  I guess that's human food they're referring to??????

maybe ask them specifically about the products you are thinking of.  if a rag full of anise oil and liquid smoke is good ok to use.....that could be very effective.

In the spring fawn bleats work well here.  The bears feed on the baby moose and caribou.  We go to the calving areas and call using fawn bleats.  We are not allowed to use bait unless we register a bait station.  Running a bait station can be awful time consuming.

holy cow, you aint just whistlin dixie.  lately round here its "eat, sleep, talk to wife, bait.....eat, sleep, talk to wife, bait....."

i just set up another station over the week end......i think its now going to be...."eat, sleep, bait....eat, sleep, bait....."... :)
