the 4 bore

awhile back i saw an article on the old 4 bores and 8 bores and i cant for the life of me recall where it was from.

all i can say is....who coulda shot one and kept from shakin their body apart?...lol

I would think they kicked pretty hard. But remember, these were blackpowder rounds. The velocity was low, and the only way to increase killing power was a with a bigger slug. So if you wanted the foot-pounds to kill elephants, you shot 1000 or 1500 grain bullets, whether you liked it or not.

Wonder how fast the rounds for those 4 bores went. What do you think maybe 1400 fps or 1000  fps. :D

1400-1500 fps sounds about right for roundballs.

a couple hundreds lbs of recoil on your shoulder...I dont think I'd even try it, it scares me to think about even trying it

I don't think it would be all that unbearable. Don't forget, there was no such thing as a shooting bench back then. You stood on your hind legs and took it like a man. The bench is where most shooters become recoil-shy.

Regulators...the guys who adjust the barrels on double rifles, do so from a standing bench as this allows the whole body to move with the recoil as opposed to your shoulder absorbing the recoil.  Ramrod  is correct in saying that The bench is where most shooters become recoil-shy.
There is a certain type of mentality that thinks
if you make certain inanimate objects illegal
their criminal misuse will disappear!
