Cottontail Rabbit trouble in the city
« on: May 18, 2005, 08:52:57 AM »
This looks like a pretty good place to learn.  But I am humbled by you guys trapping beaver, bobcat, etc. in the country.   I am repeating a lot of bad words about rabbits eating my blueberry bushes down to the ground in the city in my back yard. My wife won't let me shoot an air pellet rifle, the neighbors might see me and it is illegal in the city.   I have caught 5 rabbits this spring in a Havahart trap but one rabbit is very wary.  He will not go in the Havahart trap now, but he will eat carrots outside the trap.  And the Conibear 110 has missed a few times, even with a stabilizer, using carrots on the trigger. But I did kill one starling using apple as bait.   So I ordered three Duke coil spring foot traps.  I plan on covering the Dukes completely up with dirt.  Is this the right way to do it???   I may try snares too.  What is the best snare to get?.  Where should I get a dozen snares?  Thanks  and you guys keep posting those pictures!

Steve---welcome,glad you could join us.
For rabbits ,your cage trap is fine, just give them a smorgasboard of fruits and veggies to choose from. I will see if I can get my friend Mike to post a listing of what he uses in his rabbit cage traps. He has been doing very well on cleaning up problem rabbits.
If you use 110s fro rabbits, dont bait the triggers.Set them in their trails .
Footholds are not the best choice of traps when dealing with rabbits.

A small snare eahter  3/64" or 1/16" 24" long (7x7 cable). Will catch your smart rabbit. Set the snares in his trail about 3" up off the groung with about a 4"-5" loop.

Bogmaster, Thanks for your reply.  I will try different kinds of fruits and veggies.  These cottontail rabbits do not seem to like broccoli.  But they like carrots and apple.
Yes, I have been baiting the trigger.  One of my 110s missed again last night.  But I will try what you say and put the Conibear 110s in a trail.  I will also make a trail by keeping the grass cut short in the center of the trail as the pictures in http://www.wilderness-survival.net/food-2.php  I also read where two 110s inside a 6 inch stove pipe works ok too.  I may try this.
Footholds are not the best you say?  What is the trouble with them?  Do they miss?  I have never tried a foothold.  But I have 3 Dukes coming in the mail from EBAY.
This rabbit is quite the conversation topic here at work.  They are calling me Trapper Steve with my new found hobby.  Everyone says I should skin this rabbit and nail his hide up in the garage!
