well, some of you might remember that a few months ago i found a really nice original '92 rifle in .25-20 for $450 Cdn. i had the money saved and ready to go when $1500 worth of dental work intervened, but as of friday my bills will be paid off and my paychecks will be mine once more. when i was looking for a 25-20 in my price range i ran across a SRC in .44-40 for the same price, little rougher shape. i toyed with it but i didn't really want a carbine and i really wanted a .25-20. the .25 has since been sold, but the .44 is still listed on the dealers website. i figure i'll start saving my cash and if it's still there in 8 weeks, i'll take it, if not he's also got some real nice 1894's in .30-30 too. my 11 year old cousin is a fanatic about hunting and fishing and he'll be able to start hunting in 2-3 years. i figure this would make a good deer rifle for him, as he's fairly small and a SRC would feel like a full size rifle to him. and where i hunt most deer are seen and shot at 50-100 yards, so with proper practice and shot placement the .44-40 should be more then enough. here's a pic of the SRC,

and if that doesn't pan out, a 1894 in .30-30

kevin.303 - that's a tough choice.  I can really understand the 25-20 and it's too bad you missed that one, but either the 44-40 or the 30-30 would make a fabul;ous gift for that 11 y/o.

My old Lyman manual shows some reloads for the 44-40 from a 24" bbl that are pretty dang snotty - way beyond what they play with in the CASS.  With 200 gn bullets, you can load out to  near 2k'/sec, ifin ya wants to.

But, the 30-30 is just about the best whitetail cartridge around and I can guarrantee ya that he would keep that for the rest of his life.  I would.  Mikey.

the dingbat with the 32 special had sold it a month before i saw the listing, but hadn't deleted it. i have no intention of giving it to my cousin, but he will be using it for his first few hunts. he's got over $1500 of his own he won in a small town poker derby, so i think he'd want to pick and choose something for himself. i am gonna buy him a .22, just can't decide what. as for the '92 or the 1894 it is a tough choice. both are $450, but i'll probably take the '92. unless it's sold before i can get it then i'll look for another one or take the 1894. for another $50 i could get one in .38-55 or a fixer upper 1895 in .303 British. argh, i hate decisions!!!

yeah, $450 for a .38-55 SRC, here's the site, you can see why it's hard to choose. you Americans could buy from them, but it'd be a good sized pile of red tape.

Put each of them to your shoulder, look across the sights, then work the lever.  I'm sure that the '92 will go home with you.  Besides 30-30 can be had commonly, but 44-40's?

only problem with that is they're half way across the country, but i might be able to find someone on canadian gunnutz to look at them for me. i will go for the '92 since that was my original want, and .30-30's are a dime a dozen. but like i said, i got to save the cash, so it might be gone in 6 weeks( although it hasn't moved in 6 months). if it's gone i'll look around or get one of those 1894's. do any of the ammo companys still produce .32-40 ammo? can it be formed from other brass.
