Could someone here provide a muzzle velocity for the 309JDJ with 150gr. bullet in a 14" barrel?
Also MV for a 338JDJ with a 180 or 200 gr. bullet. Thanks!

Try this.

You can get real close to the 309jdj with a 30-30 AI with a lot less powder.

My barrel is a rechambered factory barrel and will run most 150 grain bullets at about 2350 fps with a max load of 51.5 gr of 4350. It is a mite slower than JDJ custom barrels..interestingly it will get the 165 gr. slugs going 2290 fps..just about 50 fps slower than the 150's so that is my prefered bullet for general use.

I have a 14" SSK 309JDJ and I'm shooting 150grn Nosler Ballistic Tips with 50grns of IMR 4350 and get 2450fps with 15fps deviation.
This is my go to barrel most of the time when I hunt. I have taken several whitetails and coyotes and it does a number on them. It is sighted 1.5" high at 100 and it's 1.5" low at 200. I have taken deer out to 260yds with it and they hit the ground. I fireformed some loads with 150grn Spire Points in Hornady and some Ballistic Tips. They were shooting around an inch at 100yds fireforming. It sure is a fun barrel.

Very nice Mike!
Could someone with a 30-30AI give a comparison to mikes performance?
Thanks

Tad, I have both and they're very nearly equal w/ 125's and 150's. The 309 really steps out ahead when you get to heavier bullets...165's and especially the 180's. I've often told myself that I didn't need both and should get rid of one, but I like them both so much that I just can't bring myself to do it. If I had neither, I would get the 30-30AI in a flash since I've never hunted anything that a .30 caliber 150gr bullet would handle....but one of these days......if I live long enough. The SSK barrel has a slight edge in accuracy, but I would expect that from a much more exspensive custom barrel. At very long range, the accuracy and heavier bullets would be an advantage even with deer, but most of my deer hunting is pretty close. I'd rate both barrels as excellent. Initial cost and powder consumption favor the 30-30AI as does recoil and blast, but its not a big difference. Can't go wrong, either way. GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt

Walt nailed it pretty good in the comparison..I have both as well and the JDJ is best with heavier bullets...but my 30-30AI is better with light weights. Both are extremely accurate. They are both great deer rounds and are all you need for most hunting. The JDJ uses more powder and the cases cost a bit more...30-30AI is just a little less costly to shoot.
My 309 barrel has always been a little slower than the data supplied from SSK...and my 30-30AI is a little faster than I expected so the velocity difference is not all that much. The recoil is...but neither one is a problem to handle and neither one has a muzzle brake.
If I had to pick one for most hunting chores it would be the smaller case.
I larger game were in the mix the larger case with heavier bullets would possibly serve a bit better.
You can be like me and Walt and get both...can't go wrong that way.

Thanks guys, ive got a 375 JDJ for the big stuff, i was thinking about a max round for the contender in 30 cal. 150 gr. Sounds like the 30-30AI is real close.

If the 150 grains work for you, I would go with the 30-30AI. One other advantage with the 30-30 is that you can shoot off the shelf 30-30 ammo and you have instant fire formed brass. Also, Lee has dies for the 30-30AI for around $25. I bought the 14" 30-30AI barrel Midway had on sale a while back and it shoots great. I just saw one on Ebay that you can probably get a great deal on. I wouldn't spend the extra money on the 309. I have one of those in a Carbine and I love it for the 165 grn bullets.
