375 H&H
« on: May 19, 2005, 10:56:42 AM »
I was at the range today shooting my 375 H&H with 270gr bullets going 2710fps. I shot standing with my right hand against a 4x4 upright supporting the rifle shot about 8 like this then I nealed and my right hand was in the same position and shot 8 more. Then I sat on the ground and shot the other 4 rounds. Two missed the target three missed what I shot at
and all the rest shot a 5" group at 100 yds. I don't think that was to bad.
What do you think? :D

The rifle has a scope, weights 10lbs and the target was 8" in a circle. :D

I got to agree.  A scoped .375 H&H and it shoots like that.  Something is very wrong.  The .375 H&H cartridge is noted for it's accuracy.  What make/model is your rifle and make/model scope/mounts/rings are you using?  Lawdog

It is a Sako Hunter Model, Leopole scope. Every thing is tight with the scope. I thought it was pretty good shooting. The more I shot the better I got. The last three I shot were in side of 1.5".  But you take a clean rifle and shoot the group isn't going to be 1.5" Thats what I did and 5" group is pretty good doing that I think. :D

Now the 1.5 inch group is not bad. It was the 5 inch group the had me worried.

I also have a Sako in 375H&H. It is toped with a Leupold 3X9X50.  My Sako is on a mauser action, the gun was made in 1960 and shoots like a dream.  :D

I put 3 bullets threw the same hole with my 375 H&H at 200 yds. I thought everybody knew that when you shoot a rifle with a clean barrel that the bullets don't always go where you want them to go. My mistake. I guess I'll have to say so next time. :D

There's also the process of break-in... the first number of rounds you shoot help finish the metalurgy of the barrel settle down.  Best thing is simply not to overheat the barrel.  Secondary, keep cleaning it so that you work at polishing the surface -- though this isn't as important as just shooting it, letting it cool, etc. for a while.

My guns are sighted in with a clean barrel. I clean the barrel each shot to simulate a clean barrel while hunting. My shots after the first shot are also right on target.  I guess we all have our ways of setting up our guns.  :D

Redhawk,
I shoot until the barrel has enought copper in it to put the rounds real close together. Until this happens the rounds don't go to point of aim. So its not just a clean gun. It usually takes around 3 to 6 rounds to get this done. In this period the bullets usually cover 5 to 8 inches in all my rifles.
This is what I thought everyone knew. If there is a different way to do this I would like to know.  :D

I know exactly what you are talking about. But I like to have my guns sighted in with a clean barrel. When I go out hunting I don't shoot my guns and then go hunting. I shot them with a clean barrel. That is just the way I do it. I use to do it the same way you do it, but thought the years of shooting I have tried different things. It may not work for you.but it works for me.  :D

I guess everyone has their own way. I've been shooting 44 years and didn't know there was another way. But they say you learn something new every day. :D
