Scout scope AND peep sight on a 336.
« on: May 19, 2005, 03:22:49 PM »
I have a Williams 5D receiver sight on my .30-30 and I like it very much but I am aware of it's limitations past 100 yards.

Is it possible to have a gunsmith tap the receiver so that the rifle could have a Scout Scope mounted on see-thru scope mounts?

That seems like it would be ideal.

I must admit I know very very little about Scout Scopes, from what I've seen they are placed on rifles without iron sights.

I guess what I'm trying to say is this:

I there a way I can configure the 336 so I can use iron sights for up to 100yards and mount a scope system to sight past 100yards?

The most logical choice would be factory sights with a convention scope mounted on see-thru's.

Is any of this even possible?

I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for but...  Here at Cabela's (  http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jhtml?id=0012852224749a&type=product&cmCat=search&returnString=hasJS=true&_D%3AhasJS=+&QueryText=marlin+336&_DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fsearch%2Fsearch-box.jhtml.22&N=4887&Ntk=Products&Ntx=mode+matchall&Nty=1&Ntt=marlin+336&noImage=0&returnPage=search-results1.jhtml ) they have a scope rail that lets you use a receiver sight that uses the last two holes in the receiver and put a scout scope out over the barrel.  You have to remove the factory rear sight but it might work.  Hope this helps.

p.s. If the link does not work, here is the item # UE-224749.  It cost $50 + shipping.
Anyone who claims the 30-06 doesn't work has either not tried it or is unwittingly commenting on their marksmanship.

Lever Scout Set-up ... Excellant System!
Hi Dirty Tiger,

I have used the Lever Scout Mount from XS Express Sight System for over two years on my Marlin 1895SS with great success - it works!

I've got a Leupold M8-2.5x28mm IER Scout scope which has 9 to 17 inches of non-critical eye relief that makes it excellent for a lever action.  The scope ends up above the barrel, in front of the receiver in the lever scout mount using Warne Quick-Detach 1" Rings.

To complement the scope set-up I have also installed the AO Ghost Ring Sights.  In fact the picture you see at Cabelas is just how my rig appears, with the addition of the Warne Quick-Detach rings.

Your idea is bang on, I use the scope for most hunting and can readily shoot out to 200 yds (if needed).  Another bonus of the scout scope configuration is that you keep both eyes open (just like your peep site) and can see all around the scope at the same time.   Using the scope allows you to make the shot in the dark bush because you can see the game through it.  When conditions get rainy or snowy and the scope is hard to keep clear I take it off and use my ghost ring sights.  It is terrific!

If you set up your rifle in a similar way, I'm sure you will be pleased.

Andy

Thanx 4 the links.

What I really want to do is use the peep sights WITHOUT removing the scope.

It looks like I might be able to use that scope set up with see-thru mounts and sight through the peep under the scout scope.

That's a very interesting idea.  I've never heard of anybody using see-through rings on a scout scope setup.  If you do it, please let us know how it works out for you.

See-thru rings on a scout scope?
Dirty Tiger,

Give it a go with the see-thru rings and let us know what you think.  My feeling on scope mounting has been to always have the scope as close to the bore (barrel) as possible.  Generally this results in a strong check weld to the stock and aids in making a better shot.
