In the vernacular of the Revolution , is the Galloper and Grasshopper types interchangable .

I grew up in NC and they are one of my favs.

The little 3lbers @36" that had the single horse draw , sometimes they are narrow 28" between wheels w/ the ammo chest between the trails.

Then there are wider ones w/ ammo on each axle and one between trails . But both overall small towed by a horse . Hit and git....!

Butterfly and Grasshopper were light 3pdrs. Only their carriages differed. Col. Pattison's was the Grasshopper. The shafts that men used to carry the cannon on their shoulders in the Irish fashion, made it look rather like a grasshopper. The butterfly had a limber. If you wish to read a comprehensive booklet on the subject, avail yourself of: "GRASSHOPPERS AND BUTTERFLIES: The Light 3 Pounders of Pattison and Townshend"; by Adrian B. Caruana. published in 1980 by Museum Restoration Service.  If you have specific questions, I may be able to research the booklet for answers. The written history and records for the pieces is limited.

I bought my copy over 25 years ago, along with "BRITISH ARTILLERY AMMUNITION 1780" by Adrian B. Caruana.

Museum Restoration Service
Bloomfield, Ont.
Canada K0K 1G0

They were, if I remember correctly, advertised in, "THE ARTILLERYMAN". They were $10 each but I don't remember if that was Canadian or U.S.c.. The cover price was $5.95 ?

google the company ?

I'll try to scan the back cover for you in a little while.

I'll just figure I would show how far I have been getting along with my last M-BPFC project. I don't have to much to go. The painting part is interest. i can't use the Krylon outside and it really stinks up the place. Kind of like get a buzz off the stuff with some brain damage to boot. I have an IQ of 147 and I figure I should drop thenumber dowm a little.

Spray away Ray.  How about when you take pictures of the guns besides aerial shots, take some ground level shots also.

I found a half a can of brown Krylon in the shed. I got worried for a second because I only thought I had primer, Olive drab and Floresent orange. None of those colors would have been good but on the bottom was good old brown. Its 20 degrees outside but I shouldn't complain. I downloaded that picture of the themometer that read -20 and use it as wall paper to give me gratitude.
So yes I have to paint inside. And I know the end result. I am going listen to that "pot head music" Thinking everybody I see has a rubber head. And suffer the short term memory loss again Krylon vapors has a way of doing this to me.
Seriously I googled Galoper and came up with this picture. I would need to get another set of wheels for that one. I hate making wagon wheels. Another idea is a Marsille carraige? Like on the Daugren or something like Tad Lincoln,s toy cannon I saw a picture on this site and saved that too  This looks like an interesting future project considering I do have a few extra barrels Just say it "isn't so Joe" that powder charges were kept on the boxes on top of the axles on the Galloper.
When I am finished with this present project I will take pictures from different angles and I would forget that can of Goex

Ray; I question what was written on google, that you read, i.e., "I googled galoper and came up with this picture".

I doubt that is a gaLLoper. As I understand it, a "galloper" has two (2) shafts that a horse "gallops" between; hence, a "galloper".

Is this a posted picture of what you googled?

I can try to scan more from my book if you want me to.

nb: In the caption, e.g. "galloper". Two (02) shafts with a horse between.

There are two styles of guns that seem to have their names interchanged

one is the Galloper and the other is the Grasshopper,

I'll have to dig out my books but I believe the Galloper had trails that a horse could fit between, a Grasshopper had a standard carriage but had fittings fore and aft

so that poles could be placed and it could be carried like a strecher or with the one set on the trail towed by a horse.

Mr president I do not cling to either my gun or my Bible.... my gun is holstered on my side so I may carry my Bible and quote from it!

Have I been mislead by the almighty Google? I have been on a tear in the workshop. While the paint is drying on one project. I started another. I think the six cups of coffeee has me wired up. I even popped off a round with a golfball mortar today. Finished a couple of Golf ball mortars. Stilll going to work on auctions from another unamed site. Work on the 2 M-BPFC projects and I might as well wash the walls while I am at it.

Kabar: This is the Irish method of carry. Note the bend in the rear poles. "Grasshopper legs". There are three carriages illustrated for "Light 3 pdrs", e.g. Pattison for the Irish carry Grasshopper; a Congreve carriage; and a Townshend.  The contradictions are endless.

Just to mess-up our minds a little more, here is the Congreve carriage. No hardware for carry.

I am going to have to wait on that one even though I have a few extra barrels I just don't have the wheel and they are such a hassle to make.

So from a previous page, we know the Galloper rigging. Look at the trail. It doesn't fit the Pattison or Congreve; ergo, it is Townshend, a.k.a. Galloper.  If you read the book carefully, you will read the statement that information is incomplete. I see contradictions in the descriptions on the original illustrations from the period but I won't go into that. Enough is enough.

Well I have been slacking off this project It sat on the back burner for about 3 years plus my wood cutting has gotten rusty. But when I picked up those barrels from the Irishman from Brooks-Usa I had to do something with them so here is some shots of the Revolutionary war type carraige I finally finished. I have another project in the making but it is going to take a while, as for the galloper. I need more carraige wheels. Here is some ground level shots with a Goex can plus one with a cancer stick to use for scale.

I could carry a whole battery of these in my my carry on luggage. Just the powder thing I do not think airport security would appreciate. Having blode hair and blue eyes might make me fit some kind of profie.. It would nice to lug that brass Parrotgun to the Montana shoot. As for ging to Montana I am a frequent flyer constantly going to FT Lauderdale I wonder how many frequent flyer points I have?

Have the powder drop shipped here.  You could also mail or UPS you powder handling tools here. I can also pick some fire crackers 4th of July.

You probably will want to ship your cannons out and not take them on the plane either.  Let me know, I'll work with you.
