Rumor has it Polly does want a cracker !

Parrots DO come from the south you know ?

Why am I forsaken ???? It's a mockery of a tradgity of an injustice ... I tell ya !

Parrots are natural born Southerners . And pretty too ,espesially the lesser known "Golden Toned Long Toms " .

Just like the CSA would have made if they had made Parrots         ......      guns ....  of brass .... and named them polly ,.... yep I'm # 7 .....now . :D

I hadn't had achance to reply to this post (busy on the home front) Michael those are some really fine barrels. Sorry for being a pushy pain in the butt. But you do some great work.
From doing prior R&D with a Brooks-USA .30 cal. mountain howitzer barrel. You will have to lighten the load a little bit to avoid having predetonation of the firecracker in ther barrel. But once you get the load right it launches a black cat a very good distance.

I'm confused.  Is this a firecracker cannon or a blackpowder cannon that can also launch a firecracker?

Ray,  Thanks for the input. When you pick up this bird, the first reaction is that it must eat a lot of grains!

Was quite surprised to learn otherwise. That is what caused the bird on the "left" to be dirty. (not a political statement, DD  ;D) JB has ammended the instructions to 7 or 8 grains of ffg from the 10 grains in the original BYCF barrel.

Can someone tell me how many days it will take to consume 1/4 pound of ffg?

DD,

I confuse people when I even think of black powder cannon. I get tunnel vision. The answers to your questions are NO and YES.

7000 grains per pound/7 grains per shot equals 1000 shots, so a quarter pound should give 250 shots.  How many shots per day do you fire?

You have found a very cost efficent way of having fun especially during this economy.  1/4 pound is about $5.00 worth of black powder. With todays economy where can you have fun for $5.00?
Micheal you have the .30 cal barrel out are you planning on doing .50 cal?

Thanks George,  with our stockpiles shrinking, we need to consume less.

Ray,  I made a 50 cal Parrott, then started thinking about shrinking stockpiles, so I built a 40 cal... that Parrott will consume less grain. I don't know which one to build....what do you think? 40 cal or 50 cal.

Go with the 50 cal. Go with the 50 cal. Go with the 50 cal. Easier to get ammo for.

Agree with the 50 caliber...most gunshops carry precast or swaged .50 round lead ball for muzzle loaders. The 50 calliber will be much more marketable.

While .395 ball is available. Sounds like the group wants the .50 cal. .490 ball is easy find. So .50 cal is the best bet.

George, They are turned from FC360 extruded brass rod, as all of our barrels are. Thus the designated "Golden Gun". Thanks for asking, I should have called it out.

I own a Brooks .30 cohorn and I've more fun with it than shoud be allowed .....and may not be soon  ???.

You can watch them sail in a high arc then pop . timing them to air bust is not too hard ,if you use the red high class cracker w/green fuse .

This Parrot hits quick and with distance and air busts too ! with the regular Black Cat type cracker .

Tomorrow I will dig out the red ..."shells" and think this thing out for as long as I can stand it ....! ;D

I am getting into this backyard mortar fun thread.  So I went in search of and now I have a question.

I have a BNA Cork Mortar.  I love this little table top noise maker but I want to shoot something other than corks.  Want something a little more "authentic" looking.  The muzzle of my little "friend" is approx 3/4".  I found a site that sells 5/8" wooden balls ($6 per 100).

Think putting these out of the muzzle (with the normal powder load for a #7 cork) would be a problem?

Wonder if I can get them going fast enough to take out a few squirrels...lol.

Considering how much windage you'd have with a 5/8 projectile in a 3/4 bore, I see no problem unless the barrel is of really lightweight construction.

I have the same mortar. 5/8" wood balls don't go too far (~10') with a charge of FFFG using the supplied measure. I got some 3/4" balls, but they're too big. I sanded a few down to fit snug, and they shot ~30 yds.

Thanks. Coming from you I take that as a real compliment. This thread will be 4 years old on May 21st. It seemed like when I started this post most of the posts where for full scale cannon. A lot of people can't afford one of them or just don't have the space. So this is a great alternative.
I cannot take all the credit. A lot has to got to Michael the Irishman he does make some really beautiful barrels and he puts up with me. And especially all the people who have contributed to this post. I learned a lot from the posts and I am getting some cool Myrlwood to boot.
It started with the M-series cannon and has evolved. Now the topic is on the Parrot gun. In time it will be another (I am a pain in the butt to the Irishman saying you gotta make one of these or those hee hee)
I tend to talk to much. So I am just going to thank everyone who contributed to this post. And thank Michael and warn him I got some more ideas. and hopefully this topic will last another 4 years and go up in the statistics.
                                                                                                          Ray
PS as for the most posted topic "why does God send people to hell. I couldn't resist and put my 2 cents in that one lol.

;D well with the Dom southern parrot , and now a brass parrot which seems to me to be southern thru and thru  who else would have thought about a high pressure brass rifle (ray and Irishman excepted)

.... " uuh i don't know cleatus ...whata yall think ?"

"well we still got the bronze statue of Harriot Tubbman ....? ."  "Cleatus fecth miss Harriot into the furnace ." "We will "Cast the Brass Bird " ", and as far as anyone knows , they did.

The names have been changed to protect the guilty .....does that sound like anyone you know you know Irishman ??? huuummm , mabe just a little . ;D

BTW I already dropped it ! It has character now , and I will never polish it as I want a old school patina . and a dent !
