Is it just me or what??
« on: May 22, 2005, 05:03:06 AM »
Being only 32(33 in a couple weeks), some of you guys may still concider me to be youngster..   but,

...But in my youth, matte, blue and dark finishes were all I looked at an concidered when being a pistol(or longgun for that matter).  As of lately though, all I look at are stainless models that tend to be bright and shiny.

I'm thinking somewhere along the line I got tired of worrying about moisture, rain, and snow possibly starting rust.   When I was 20, I passed up a nice SS 44mag from one uncle to buy my Royal Blue Colt Python .357 from another uncle.  I was in love with it from the day I first saw it in my uncle's gun cabinet(he knew it too lol).  But ever since I had felt I had to be extra conscious of environment and handling so that I dont mar the beautifully mirrored bluing.  ...fishing, hunting, target, CCW(yeah, 8" barrel with shoulder holster).

Lately though,  my workhorse has been my 10.5" stainless SA 44mag.  Last weekend I was glad I did, I slipped into a creek while fly fishing.  Instead of double checking my revolver first, I first checked to see if my cellphone was ok, then my wallet.  In the back of my head I knew I wouldn't have to worry about my Dragoon-only a debris check at my first convenience.

I also went from typically militia type firearms(semi-auto, hi-cap pistols and longguns) to SA revolvers, leverguns and single shots as being my only desired choices.

Anyone here also notice a change in "flavors" of firearms over your lifetime?

My tastes have changed nearly identical to yours.

I started out(6 years old) stalking my prey, and taking close shots with open sights. During the teen years, I started working(had a little money), and leaning towards longer ranges, and scoped rifles. By my early 20's I had matured into a full blown long range nut case complete with rifles that ran into the thousands instead of hundreds of dollars, not to mention all the handloading stuff!

By the end of my "roaring 20's", I was coming full circle, had started stalking my game again, instead of sniping, and have now come to appreciate a good revolver kill way more than any rifle kill.

You are not the only one thinking that way.  I had been thinking for a while already that I have accumulated some of the guns I always wanted to have.  I take them for target shooting and hunting and as soon as I get exceptional groupings with them, I put them in the back of my gun cabinet and play around with the other ones.  I started as a rifle man and I always favored smaller calibers.  Finally later on, I ventured into medium bore up to and including 30 cal.  I went back dow to 7mm-08 Rem and I stopped right there.  Excellent gun for all my needs.  Then, there comes the pistol hunting fever.  My brother in South America told me the stories of him killing a woodchuk-like animar at 40 yds with his 3.5" bbl Bersa .22 LR pistol, and then other great shots he took with to other small game.  Enter the Ruger Mak 2.  I've started looking at gun magazines and there it was.  The slab sided Ruger 6-7/8" bbl SST slab sided with scope.  I left my rifles at home collecting dust and on went to small game hunt with that pistol.  Then, Iowa opened up its deer handgun season.  I rushed and got a .357 mag. then the 44 mag.  Ever since, I have all my rifles collecting dust and I love to hunt with the pistol.  Now I am thinking about the 454 Cassull.  Several revolvers and pistols later, I've noticed that 80% of the gun cabinet is filled with guns I am not shooting any more.  While my handguns are the most used now.  I always avoided military type looking rifles and now I am thinking about one of those AR-15 type of rifles.  Yes, I had dreams about replacing all my rifles by a one single action (T/C Encore or T/C G2 Contender) of each and have the bbls I like to have.  Oh well, I started getting carried away... sorry.

Most of my handguns are stainless. But I also like the look of the blued guns.  :D

I still knid like them all. The right gun at the right price usually flowes me home wheather blue or stainless, and any gun can be the right gun if the price is right. Blued gun with fancy wood always take my eye, but the price usually causes me to leave them where I found them. Kinda like Model 12 Wins., I just have to look at them and I already have 7 of them.    What can I say except I like gun, all of them.

I started buying guns in the early 90’s and everything, in the way of handguns, had already taken the SS trend. The majority of my handguns are stainless but the majority of my rifles are blued and wood. Just recently I ordered my second long gun in SS/Synthetic. As far as handguns go when it comes to DA revolvers I only own SW’s and of late have began to add a few of the blued classics to the stash. When it comes to SA revolvers I only buy FA when funds permit. And for SA autos they are all 1911 style with all being SS with exception of one. I just recently downsized my DA autos to one being a Walther PPK/s and replaced them with guns that suit my taste better. For the most part I like all guns but I’m picky about which I will put my $$ towards.

Take Care,
Scott

I STARTED OUT THE SAME WAY. NOWADAYS THOUGH I USE A STAINLESS RUGER SUPER REDHAWK IN .44 FOR HUNTING, AND ALMOST EVERY OTHER HANDGUN I BUY IS BLUED. START YOUR KIDS EARLY LEARNING HOW TO OIL A GUN, AND THEIR KIDS WILL APPRECIATE SHOOTING ONE OF GRAMPA'S PISTOLS.

I started out with SA revolvers.  Just liked the classic styling they had.  For quite a while that was I was really interested in.  Eventually bought a auto but still preferred those nice SA's.  A short time ago, I got into a auto mode for a bit.  Bought a couple to quench my thirst for them all the while keping my eyes open for another nice SA.  Now, I'm kinda torn regaring handguns.  Nothing really striking as far as SA's go but a couple autos interest me.  I know one model of SA coming i Jan I've got my name already on for 2 of them so I can wait for those.  In the mean time, I've been bitten by the 10/22 bug and have been building them up for fun.  Started the yr with just 2 but now have a 3rd almost done, another to start and 3 more stocks on the way that'll need to be built-up and complted.
So yeah, I guess I have stages but will not stray far from those timeless ol' SA's (Rugers specifically)

:cb2: My early purchases were stainless, but my tastes changed, and I grew to appreciate blued guns. I haven't bought a stainless one in years. Your Royal Blue Python is the most beautiful of all. As a matter of fact, the only SS I want is a FA83.

I used to think that I needed stainless so it wouldn't rust, but I take good care of my firearms, and it has never been a problem carrying a blued handgun, or hunting with a blued rifle.

I'm very glad that S&W is starting to make blued guns again. (I'm still looking for a 3" M13. One will turn up someday.)

As for other taste changes, I can remember when I thought SA revolvers were totally useless. Couldn't figure out why anybody would want one. Then on a wild hair I bought one, and fell in love with them. It's been nothing but SA guns ever since. (Might still get a Glock 36, however, but the FA83 will come first.)

I also changed from bolt guns to levers.
