Barrel length question?

today i bought a 7mm ultra mag and was wondering why the ultra mags have a 26 inch barrel length and the regular mags have 24 inch I noticed that most Weatherby mags have a 26 inch barrel's also any ideas?

:) Be Happy!!! Those long magnums need the length to burn all that powder and fully realize their ballistic potential. You put that 7 UltMag in a 22" barrel you would have a barrel jumping ear blaster with downrange ballistics closer to a .270 in a 24" barrel. :eek:

In addition to what Big Tom said, which is all correct, as a result of not burning all of the powder, and other factors, the velocity drops accordingly.  As such, if your 26" barreled 7 Ultra (of which I also own one :wink: ) had a barrel length of 22", then I would guess that its velocity would probably be similar to, if not less than, a regular 7mm Rem. Mag.
