shot my 460 s&w encore today
« on: May 22, 2005, 11:11:14 AM »
I finally got to shoot my 454 12" casull rechambered to the 460 s&w today!  It is my first encore pistol barrel.  What a great time!  Im hooked.  Got an average of 2243fps w/ 240xtp's.  Not sure if that is great or not, have not been able to find much info yet.  Load was w/ 44grains H110.  Started at 40 grains and worked up.  No obvious pressure signs.  Not sure of accuracy yet, Burris scope inner lens became covered in black flakes again, will ship back to Burris again Mon.  Cant wait to get back out to the range!

Chris,
I`ve bought 2 Burrius scopes in my life and both were junk. I have over 30 Leupolds and have never had a problem with any of them, get a Leo and put on the gun, it deservies it.

How did Burris respond when you reterned the defective scopes?  All scope companies, even Leupold, let problems out once in a while.  I have had trouble with more than two Leupolds over the years.  I expect I will see more that are less than models of fine optics.  Wouldn't call them junk, however.

Both Burris and Leupold stand behind their product.  Each have strengths and weaknesses.

recoil

the recoil was very snappy.  I really dont have anything to compare it to, this is my first encore pistol barrel.  It is not ported, but I didnt think it will be unmanagable.  Maybe only because Im using fairly light bullets.?  I didnt shoot much to check accuracy, I shot some factory 454 loads to get centered on paper, then went to the chronograph with the 460 loads.  Unfortunately thats when the scope went bad.  Burris was very friendly both times I have talked to them, said they arent sure why there is a prob.  Will see what happens when the scope comes back a 2nd time.

The scope was mounted with the 3ring T'sob from ssk industries.  The first time that the debris or flakes kicked up onto the lens I was shooting 454 factory ammo.  Burris seems to think that this is an easy problem to repair, just didnt get done properly the first time.  Will cross my fingers when it comes back.
Does anyone have any input on maybe trying a little faster powder than h110. Using 240xtp's.  Between 40-44 grains the fps slowly went up.  44grains gave me 2243fps average, but 45 grains slowed down some. Did I hit the threshold for effectiveness with that speed of powder vs barrel length?

thanks  chris

Thats the problem, I dont know what max load is.  There is no reload data available for this round yet.  I have tried all of the powder companies and the bullet companies involved in the facory ammo.  Im just using  the hot 454 loads as the starting point and trying to end up with velocity that seems about right based on the 3 factory loads available.  The bullets used in the factory ammo are not even avialable to the public yet. Just going slow and watching for pressure signs.  Im sure Im probably getting close, or at least as for as Im willing to push it withoout some reload data.  I will for sure look into lapping the rings.  Ill try anything at this point.

thanks for the input

ca dunn, call up Cor-bon and ask for Peter Pi. He was helpful to me when the 500MAG first came out. I am sure he would give you some data.  :D

I assume that you had SSK do the rechamber for you on a factory TC 12" Encore barrel?  Is it blue or stainless?  I have been thinking about having one of these done - how did the chamber turn out?  What was the turn around time, and were you generally satisfied?  Is there any type of brake on the barrel?

I checked w/  corbon, they said they had no info avail yet because they use a commercial powder not avail to the public.  I guess Ill have to be patient for now.

The barrel was re-chambered by SSK industries, took about a week total turn around time for re-chamber job and T'SOB install. Very fast service.  The chamber looks great.  T'SOB looks great also.  Is a blued barrel.  JD Jones said that they had already done a few 460 barrels including his own.

I asked for some help from JD Jones with my .375 JDJ.  I know it was his baby, but I just thought he could help you with this small problem.  He is very approachable and a nice guy.  Give him a shout.
