I have a .243 handi that shoots good with a clean or dirty barrel. I free floated the forearm on both rifles. My .223 ultra shoots tight groups when dirty. After I clean my barrel (after 10-15 rounds)  my first shot would would shoot 6" high then 2nd shot would be 4" the 3rd shot would be ok. I did this 3 times and it would repeat itself and I wasn't to happy, but very happy when gun shot dirty. Anyway was thinking about  trading my rifle in and getting a stevens 200. I showed my handi rifle to a couple of my friends who shoot bench a lot and they looked at it said nice rifle! gosh it should shoot. I said it dose pretty good when dirty. Well I took my .223 out this morning with a couple of friends who shoot bolt actions and I decided to take the O ring of the fore arm.  I shoot 5 shots and 3 shots were touching and 2 were 1/2" away! I shot more groups today and when I did my part the rifle shot very well.  Problem is I got another .223 (stevens 200) will be here tomorrow. I shouldn't of jumped the gun so fast. I shouldn't of put the O ring on the .223 but it works well on my .243 I really love the idea I can order more barrels. It was one of the reasons I got my first handi and after today it won't be my last. I guess my bride to be gets a stevens.

Mine does the same thing.  The dirty/clean thing.  Next time out, I'll clean it and pull the o ring with the 223.  I'll try it both ways with the 243 barrel.  It (243) has yet to be fired.

I don't think you made a mistake with the  Stevens, you now have one for the heavier bullets too.  Savage uses a 1 in 9 twist in the 223.

I wouldn't mind one of those my self.

If it were me in your place...I would refuse delivery on the Savage...if for some reason I couldn't...I would trade it in on a new Handi...that's just me though....

One option for the stevens is to swap out the 223 barrel for one in 17 remington. From what I have been reading swapping barrels on the savage action is realativly simple. So add a nice light wieght barrel and you would have yourself a great predator calling gun.

For the price the Stevens is a whole lot better gun. the price difference is small. For the difference you get a bolt gun with a whole lot less fiddling with to get it accurate. I own both and I am presently selling all of my handi's for the stevens. Sorry guys but I am bailing out of the Nef world.

That's really too bad...I feel sorry for you and I really hope you find your answer in the stevens( aka...second hand savage).......but as to your statement that it is a better gun... Ha-Ha That's a Joke :)  :)  :) sure sure...it is after all a bolt action...and that makes it soooooooooooooooooooo much better right..?....yea...ok...just keep on believing that...and you will never truly understand the premise of using a single shot and what it's all about...oh...and as far as accuracy goes...I'll put mine up against any stevens anyday of the week.mine are that accurate.....and simply...if you can't shoot one of the handi's accuaratly...chances are the bolt actions won't do any better for you...provided they are both functioning properly.....

After you get tired of it...I'm sure the Handi bug will bite you again...we'll see ya back here posting about your new one :wink:

So stolivar, are you going to list your H&R's/NEF's here and give us confirmed Handiholics the opportunity to buy them? Good Luck with your new addiction, Savages (Stevens) are pretty good guns also.
There is always room for you here should you decide to return. I, and I am sure others here as well, would like to have a chance to buy some of your Handi gear, so how about listing what you have, guns and associated H&R gear and equipment in the H&R classified section?....<><.... :grin:
