USH scope suggestions needed....
« on: May 22, 2005, 03:46:02 PM »
I have no pre-conceived notion of what kind of scope I'm looking for...be it a fixed or any of the variable powered scopes.

Here's the facts surrounding any purchase:
....to be mounted on a 20 ga. Ultra Slug Hunter.
....max. hunting distance should not exceed 100 yards.
....willing to spend $150 - $200 (less is just fine with me too!)

In the end I just want to end up with a good reliable scope that will stand up to the elements and the jolt of a shotgun for years to come.

Really like to hear your opinions and experience.

Thanks

I've tried a lot of different scopes on slug guns, variables, fixed, shotgun, rifle, etc.  My personal favorite is a fixed Weaver 4x32.  Clear optics, good crosshairs, good quality for the money.  Best thing of all I haven't managed to break one like a lot of the other brands I have tried.

I will suggest buying a Leupold VX-1 2x7x33...not only because it is one of the best scopes for the $179.00 you will spend...but also because it is one of the clearest & brightest scopes I have ever used...it is one of the non-critical eye relief scopes...meaning you can...and will have... the same clear and bright site picture wither your wearing heavy clothing...or in a t-shirt...it will give you the long life your looking for...so you won't ever have to worry about crawling the stocks to see out of it when you have your heavy camo on  in the winter...and best of all... it's backed by the best replacement gaurentee on the market...these aren't to be confused with the Rifleman series you can get at Wal-Mart or on the web...they also offer to anyone who owns a Leupold Golden Ring scope...which this is...the option for a nominal fee of $55 to change out the reticles in them...to any they have with the exception of mil-dots or the newer Boone & Crocket type...I'm sending mine in later this summer and having a modified #4 German reticle installed...

I can only comment on the scopes that I have mounted on my two slug guns...I used to use a 4x32 Simmons ProDiamond on my 870 but was unhappy when I "lost" two deer in the scope at close range.  I could see the deer with my non-scope eye but when I attempted to locate the deer in the scope I could not get a bead on them.  Before I could take the shot I was busted and lost out on some tasty venison.  I vowed to never let that happen again.  I removed the 4x scope from my 870 and mounted a red dot site...The 870 wore that site for a year but I really wasn't happy with it either.  Then I purchased my Ultra Slug Hunter barrel for my 10GA NEF and I wanted to go in a different direction with my scope purchase.  I eyed up a Bushnell Trophy 1.75-4x32 scope and it was just what I wanted.  I mounted that baby on my USH and I have never looked back.  The scope is clear and bright with more than enough eye relief for me.  The kicker is that I only spent $85 on it and it has held up to 3 seasons of hunting abuse and it has never lost it's zero.  I liked that scope so much that I purchased a second one for my 870.

I keep the Trophy scopes turned down to 1.75x in case some close shots present themselves.  If a deer steps out further away then I will turn the scope up to 4x.  The terrain that I hunt does not allow for a real long shot so 4x is more than enough magnification for me.

Well I decided on the Leupold 2x7x33 shotgun scope.

About a month ago, I purchased a 12 gauge USH for myself and this is the scope I put on it and felt very comfortable in doing so.

At the same time I purchased a 20 gauge USH youth model for my son and put a 1.5x4.5 Bushnell Banner on it.  Realistically, this scope would have been just fine for him now.

But the wheels started turning and I began thinking long range to the time when he'd outgrow the Y/M in a couple years and either want to upgrade to the adult size laminate stocks or trade it in towards a new USH 20 ga deluxe.

Also coming into play is the likelihood, as I'm not getting any younger and my vision isn't getting any better, that the 20 gauge will probably be my gun of choice down the road.  Let the kid carry around that 12 gauge canon!

So instead of buying a cheaper scope now and wanting to upgrade to a better scope at a later date, let's just do it right from the start and equip the 20 gauge for any situation it might be used for by either my son or myself for years to come.

The gun dealer was more than gracious is giving me full credit on the Bushnell towards the purchase of the Leupold.

Thank you all for your suggestions.
