Hello Rick,

I didn't make it to the gun show in Van Kleek Hill this year.  Did I miss something worthwhile?  We have a couple every year in Montreal, but they've become rather boring.  I usually shoot out of Stittsville, a ways past Ottawa.  It's an excellent range.  The wind is almost always at your back or straight into your face so the tricky quartering shots are a rarity.
I go close to Van Klek Hill when I visit the Hornady shop (forget the name)
down near the John Deere dealer.  I think it's called Higginsons.  For Canada his prices are quite reasonable.  I used to frequent a range south of Montreal, in St. Jean sur Richileiu, but it's always windy there, and the winds blow from all directions, typical Quebec!  Best wishes.

Cal - Montreal
RIP Cal you are missed by many.

Cal:

That's quite a trip from Montreal to Stittsville - and their range costs aren't exactly cheap.

I used to shoot there occasionally, but I've since joined the Grenville Fish and Game Club (GF&GC) in Prescott and use their 100 yd range.  It's a little farther, but the cost makes it well worth it.  I often shop at the Stittsville pro shop though.

The show in Vankleek Hill was pretty good, but it was running opposite the Orangeville show, and most of the regular gun show participants were committed to that show.  I think they'll do a lot better if they get a better date and word of mouth will bring in more people as well.  I think it was a very good first effort on their part.  I'm planning to go to Eganville on the 20th.  Even if I'm not looking for something in particular, I find gun shows to be excellent entertainment.

If you plan to go to the Carp outdoor show in  September, come by the Big Game Scoring table and ask after me.  It would be good to be able to put a face to the name.

Kevin .303;                                                                                           Thanks for stating what a 'Jumper' is, I thought it was a Jack Rabbit. What got me to reply is you quote under you message. It reminds me of a song about our soldiers fighting in Italy in WWII, "We are the D-Day Doggers", but I cannot pin down the lines for your quote.  Would it have to do with the RCN?..........................Anyhow,  I am middle aged, old more like it. I was born in Ontario, spent some time on Vancouver Island while in our Navy and then to Calgary before winding up back in Ontari-ari-ario. I am fairly new to this site and to inter-net use in general(keyboard too). I have only made a few posts. I do check in often as I find the information here(GBO) helpful, the firearm and hunting info that is. Many forums here I have not visited and likely never will. I enjoy hunting, getting out in the woods is would be more apt as I rarely bring anything to bag. Grouse hunting is my favourite and I have spent the past 2 seasons trying my luck on Ontario Jumpers, er deer. None to eat yet. This year will be my third attempt on my own. Very challenging with much trial and error. I have hunted deer with others but never got much out of it. I always was shown a stand and then waited while a drive was carried out. I never saw a deer until I started on my own 2 years ago............................I do enjoy target shooting and have a 1942 Longbranch. Miss-matched numbers, however the magazine and bolt numers do match! Curious, eh? Well, I am about to begin rambling so will close. I'll check in from time to time to see how the fellow Canuckers are doing, bye for now. Oh, I also play Squad Leader a bit, anyone remember that one?
                                                                                                                                                  Bruce Cook...I had a M94 in 32winspl once.

Kevin;
Thanks, but I will have to decline the offer. Funny but I have an Uncle who fought in Italy too. My dads brother. My dad has passed on, but he joined the RCAF in 1940 and my uncle the artillery in '43. Uncle was transferred to the infantry when the manpower shortage hit later in the war and wound up in Italy in ' 44. He turns eighty next week and I will deer hunt with him during the second week of deer hunting in 53A. He's still in good shape, bagged a 10 pointer last year with his Savage 99.......................Hows that for Ontarian deer hunting? ......" We fought into Agira-a holiday with pay; The Germans brought the bands out to greet us on the way, Showed us the sights and gave us tea; We all sang songs, the beer was free. We are the D-Day Dodgers in sunny Italy. The Moro and Ortona were taken in our stride; We didn't really fight there, We went there for the ride. Sleeping 'til noon and playing games, We live in Rome with lots of dames. We are the D-Day Dodgers in sunny Italy". To the tune of 'Lilli Marlene'.....Have a beer with a Vet this year. Hey, the year of the beer with a Vet!                     BC

I hail from North Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, land of exploding pipe bombs and smashed car windows.   Haven't done much hunting at all for a while, last time I was doing that was shooting small game.

Hi!
I live in Chepstow Ontario (10 mins from Walkerton). I hunt small game, deer, and turkeys. Got my first deer this year, a yearling doe. Our gang drives thick sections of bush and we usually fill all our tags. I'm using my extra farmer's tag for bowhunting. Well, good hunting.

Hi,

I am from New Brunswick, but am working in Virginia and soon to be in Idaho.

I've hunted all over, virginia for deer and turkey, New Brunswick for deer, moose, grouse and ducks, and now Idaho for everything else i'm missing out on.

Grouse hunting in central NB is very hard to beat!!!  With my dog, we usually kill 50 grouse and 30 woodcock each season, usually only hunting Saturdays.

Its a pleasure to be able to interact with fellow country persons, and to complain about the bad politics in Canada.

Hi All, :D

I am from Ottawa, Ontario and hunt deer with a NEF Huntsman (love it!!) as well as with a Jennings Devastator Xbow. Have taken deer with both and am hoping to get out on a moose or bear hunt one of these seasons.

Also love to get in on the occasional small game hunt, with or without dog music accompanyment!

Another Canuck checking in.

My name is Sean, and I'm from central Alberta. I'm a Journeyman Historical Metalsmith, by trade.

As far as hunting goes, I'm only interested in waterfowl. Never really could get into hunting deer, bear, moose, or elk. I'm probably one of the few canucks that uses a shotgun that was sold by a Canadian owned company. I use a CIL model 402. (Yeah, I know. They were actually made in Brazil...)

This forum looks like an enjoyable place to spend your time. I look forward to visiting as often as I can.

Hi, new Canadian member here  :D

I live about an hour's drive southwest of Montreal, Quebec in the Chateauguay Valley, beautiful apple and maple syrup country.

I love the outdoors, and my hunting game experiences to this point have only been with a camera, but I am learning a lot about nature and it's gifts that way, and that's cool too. I do love a good hunting story/yarn and am a avid reader in hunting forums.

I stumbled onto this forum, recognized a name I knew, started to read and figured out this is one AMAZING SITE!  :-) Thought it was time to join and see what I can see, learn what I can learn and participate if I have anything worthwhile sharing (it does happen to me sometimes   ) with you fine folks !

Hey Rick
So you got the big chair here eh?
Red Green is as Canadian as "eh".

I hail from Lindsay, Ontario Originally from Belleville, Corbyville to be exact. Grew up with the smell of corn mash. (yum), and surrounded by warehouses full of barrels of aging booze. (Now mostly gone, plant closed)
I now hunt deer just east of Denbiegh, near Vennachar Ontario.
Moose hunt near Minden Ontario.
What's really nice, is that Cell phones don't work at all in Vennachar, and only intermitently from the moose camp (climb a ridge).

John Y:

I thought I might eventually see you here. I think we frequent a lot of the same sites.

I'll have to check a map to find Vennachar. I often go through Denbigh on my way to my sister's cottage near Minden (Devils Lake). Never saw much moose sign around there - hope it's better where you hunt.

You make our 4th for euchre, now if I can just figure out how to deal the cards with this computer thing.

Hi John Y & Rick T

I am from around that part of the country also.  About 1968 I was the drill operator and powder man that drilled and blasted the Moira River for Manix and Summerville when they put the gas pipeline in there.  I still remember the smell of Corby's and the brown foam that floated down the river.

I also owned a piece of property just south of Denbiegh below the hill past Scotts store (1970) on the west side you cross Killpecker creek and go in to Pake lake.  I owned the 100 acre at the north end of the lake.  I bought it when I was a teenager from a Mr. Dennison (85 yrs old) for 2000.00 "paper money" and sold it 2 years later to a Dr. from Toronto for 18k.  Beautiful Place 1200 ft. of lake. I wish I still owned it.  Oh yes my wife and I planted close to 3000 trees in there when she was 8 months pregnent.  The trees should be big now.

I spent a few years in Ottawa and vacinity and moved to Alberta.  I worked for Syncrude in Fort Mcmurray for a quarter of a century and retired south of Edmonton.

All my kids were raised on wild meat, very little beef.  I am still the family shooter but the boys do the carrying.

Hi all, I'm another Canuck from Charlton, Ontario, that's about 126 miles north of North Bay or 400 miles north of Toronto. I'm retired from MNR, spent 47 years with them, enforcement work. I'm a Hunter Education Instructor and examiner as well as a Canadian Firearm Instructor and examiner. I enjoy hunting with rifle, shotgun, black powder or bow. My preferences are Moose, Deer, Waterfowl and grouse. I haven't got into turkey yet, but I did own and operate a hunting preserve for pheasants and wild turkeys. Take care now and I'll talk to you later.

Another hunter in the Ottawa valley, (Ottawa), though I have been going back home to Saskatchewan to hunt white-tail in the Carrot River area.  I have a post in the Ruger forum about a gun purchase.  Any comments from posters to this forum would be very much appreciated.  The header on my post is Ruger M77 II Target (Varmint).

Maybe the Ottawa group should organize a get together.

I'm in Mission, B.C. (about 55 miles east of Vancouver, in the Fraser Valley) and a regular on Ganadian Gunnutz. A semi-retired musician, I mostly tinker with guns (currently trying to do a little un-bubba work on a sporterized M-S carbine buit on a Greek 1903 action), although I am hoping to get to Africa in 2008 for a plains game safari (!!!!), so most of my time on GBO is spent lurking on the African Hunting forum.

I'm from near Toronto. I am a deer hunter in the fall, a coyote hinter in the winter and early spring and the rest of the time I hunt ground hogs. ( I also reload). I am a Professional Engineer(Mech) and really enjoy the H&R Handi site. ( it's a great site) I own three Handi's so far and enjoy tuning them to shoot accurately.

I have picked up on some of the anti-Canadian 'stuff' in some of the posts here and I must say it disappoints me. As an engineer I have worked with many of my American counter parts and have always enjoyed excellent relations with them. I have always found them to reasonable and capable. We are your largest trading partner and your closest ally in more ways than one and your most secure(absolutely secure) oil supplier. We share one of the longest borders in the world and have not had a dispute since the war of 1812 and the signing of the Treaty of Ghent(1815?).

It seems that the farther you folks are from our border the more misunderstanding exists. it's too bad because there is much to be admired of both countries. As we count our dead and injured coming home from Afghanistan we are reminded that your losses are so much higher. We too changed on 9/11.
