OT: Need Help Finding Load Data for 338-06
« on: May 30, 2005, 02:37:53 AM »
I need to do some reloading for my son's 338-06 And I can't find much data in any of my reloading manuals. If someone knows of a good source please let me know. I'd really appreciate it. Thank you.

So this won't be totally of topic does anyone have a handi-rifle chambered in this caliber?

Hello Oklahoma Lefty from another lefty in the pacific northwest.  Welcome to the forum.

The Hodgdon Data Manual 26th edition has loads for many wildcats, 338-06 being one of them.  What bullet and powders are you planning on using?

The Hodgdon #26 lists bullets of 200 to 275 grains and powders from IMR(DuPont) and winchester, besides of course the Hodgdon powders.

Hodgdon powders shown are H4350, H4831 and H414.

IMR powders listed are 4831, 4350, 4320, and 7828.

The only Winchester powder listed is 760.  I suspect WMR would work too.

200 grain bullet:
 Hodgdon powders
Start load
H4350-59.0 grains for 2549fps; max 65 grains for 2710fps
H414-57.0 grains/2625 fps; max 63 grains/2802 fps

IMR powders
200grain bullet
IMR4831-59.0 grains/2595 fps  max 68.5 grains/2775 fps
IMR 4350-57.0gn/2622fps  max63.0/2817fps

Winchester
start load
W760-57.0 gn/2533fps;  max 61.0/2693fps

225gn bullet
Hodgdon powders
Start:
 H4350-56.0/2546 fps;  max 62.0gn/2744fps
H414 not listed for this bullet weight).

IMR
start load
IMR4350-55.0/2464fps;  max 61.0/2710fps
IMR4320 50.0/2549fps;  max 54.0/2681

Winchester
no loads given for 225gn bullet

250gn bullet
Hodgdon
H4831-55.0gn/2216fps;  max 61.0/2408fps
H4350-54.0/2377fps;  max 60.0/2569fps
H414-54.0/2395fps;  max 60.0/2583fps

IMR
IMR7828-55.0gn/2119fps;  max 61.0/2278fps
I4831-55.0/2363;  max 61.0/2541 fps
I4350- 53.0/2372fps;  max 59.0/2610 fps

I hope this link works:

http://www.hodgdon.com/data/rifle/33806.php

It works but the book has way more data.

I'm not sure but I think the newer Hodgdon manuals do not have as many wildcat calibers listed as #26.  It was printed in 1992; may be reprints out there.  Should be able to find one at a show or online.

I posted all the data listed for the 200 grain bullet but they don't say whose bullet they're using to test the loads.

Good luck!

FYI, the 338-06 is not a wild cat as of 1998 when SAAMI adopted it ....you'll find data for the 338-06 A-square in most any loading manual. Brass can be bought with the proper headstamp from Weatherby, A-Square or Norma....or it can be made from .270, .280, 30-06 or 35 Whelen brass just by running it through a 338-06 FL sizing die. Mac and I are having our 25-06 barrels rebored to 338-06 at this time, we expect to have them done in the next few weeks.

The latest Hodgdons Annual manual also has load data for the following bullets... 160 grain Barnes X bullet...the 175 grain Barnes X bullet....and the Nosler 180 grain Ballistic tip...and the 185 grain Barnes X BT bullet.. 200 grain Hornady SP...210 grain Nosler Partition...215 grain Sierra SBT...225 Sierra SPBT...and the 250 grain Hornady SP.all tested from a 24" barrel...

The Barnes #3 manual list their...160 gr XFB...175 gr. XFB...185 gr. xbt...185 grain XLC BT...200 grain XFB...200 grain solid...210gr. XBT...210 gr..solid..210 gr..XLC BT..225 XFB...225gr solid...225 gr..xlc fb..250 xfb...and the 250 grain solid...and according to Ty at Barnes...you can use the same data with the x-bullets...here's my e-mail I recieved from him...

Hi Mac

Thanks for the email. We expect the new manual to be released toward the end of 2006.

As you might suspect, we have done lots of preliminary TSX load data and we are suggesting a small increase to the X Bullet charges as listed in the "TSX Loading Guidelines".

In the mean time you might just use the X Bullet load data without increase as I have done several times in the past. I have seen great results including higher velocities, less fouling and superb accuracy.

We Aim to please, reloading is a great hobby, enjoy it.

Nosler 5th edition reloading manual has data on their bullets as well...from the 180 gr Ballistic tips/Silvertips....up thru their 250 grain  partitions and partition golds...

The Speer 13th edition list loads from their 200 grain SP...their 225 SPBT...and thier famous 250 grain Grand Slam...

So....Lefty...I think it's time you updated your reloading manuals :) ...their is plenty of loading data available for it...to cover just about anything you want to hunt...

As soon as I get my 25-06 Ultra barrel back from Oregunsmithing...being rebored and  rechamberd to this fine round...I will be doing a indepth range report ...not only on his work...but also different factory and handloads...available for us to use in it...I'm looking forward to shooting it next month...and Quick and myself have been busy getting ready for it...dies...brass...bullets...powders...and such...so...look for the report...some time next month...

Mitchell has a good recommendation there with the Loadbook, but be careful on page 31, they have 338 win mag load data on that page!! I sent LoadbookUSA an email warning them of the error, but they never responded.

It never hurts to have the most current data...and that is for any cartridge being loaded for...it's a pain...and can get expensive...but in the end it's well worth the price...

well lefty take every thing with a grain of salt i don't have that book , i don't have a 338-06 but if i did i would have the book. i have had 5 of these books in other cartridges and like them very much. so for what ever its worth.

So, the 338-06 is now a standardized cartridge, I didn't know that.

Seein's I shoot a 338 Win Mag for serious stuff I haven't followed up on the 338-06; haven't seen fit to buy a new manual in awhile too.

Guess that makes me a "Cro-Magnum" kinda guy??
