Good bullets for the 25/20?
« on: May 30, 2005, 03:53:34 PM »
I'm looking for suggestions on a good mould or supplier of bullets for my M92 25-20.  Does anyone have any experience casting for this cartridge?  The rifle is 104 years old and has a rather dark bore, but it shoots jacketed well.  Taking into account the condition of the barrel, I'll likely have to pour my own so that I can size them properly. I would be interested if anyone knows of a good supplier that offers different diameters so I can try before I buy a mould.

It's my understanding that it would be prudent to use cast in this rifle, as opposed to jacketed.

It would be handy if the bullet was a good game bullet, and it has to work in a tube magazine.

Thanks.

I have two that I use. Both are Lyman moulds and the numbers are 257388 and 257420. The first one is a 80 grain spire point and the second is a 65 grain flat point with both being gas checked. I got them both off of Ebay for under $30 a piece a few years back. I load them for a Savage Sporter and a Remington Model 25 and love the results. They drop from the mould at 259 and I shoot them as cast without sizing. They also work well in my 25-35.

Of course the spire point would only be good for single shots or only one in the tube. A good idea shooting cast as it would be a lot easier on the thin cases and the gun. Jim
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

I ran a group buy sometime back and still have few six cavity .259 80 grain moulds left in both plain base and gas check styles. Also have a couple of custom Lee .259 sizing dies left. Bullet was fairly closely patterned after the Remington 86 grain jacketed soft point. It's slightly lighter because of the lube grooves. Might be just a hair shorter.

Moulds are $56 each delivered, and the sizer is $13 with a mould.

You can PM or email me to discuss samples.

Whelen, PMs were being cranky so I'll post my reply here and hope you get it one way or another.

Last two GCs were bespoke while you were offline. I do have PBs left. The PBs work very well in the .22 LR velocity range, and were intended as plinkers and small game rounds. A search for the last year on this board using my screen name and ".25-20 mould" should find the drawings, but if it doesn't, give me your snail mail address and I'll send you a sample.

I'm getting 1" and smaller 50 yard groups from the PB at 50 yards with a scoped Savage 23, at just subsonic. That ain't hitting on much if your primary use is varminting, but it's about perfect for small game and plinking. If you need higher velocity, the Lyman 67 grain SWC GC has worked very well for me. Just a pain in the ass to cast them with a two cavity mould and GC them when 95% of my shooting is done at 50 yards and under.

Sorry I'm out of the GCs, but this was a non profit group buy deal, and the only reason there were any left is that I fronted a few to get the deal off the ground.
