Well when my rifle is actually functioning, I get well under 1 inch.
Usual groups with my 223 are 1/2 to 3/4 using 3 shot groups.

My new .223 won't shoot less than about 3" and I'm pretty frustrated.  Have put over 200 rounds through it already - lots of different kinds of ammo.  I can shoot a 1.25" group with my barrel banded Marlin carbine so I don't think it's all me.   I'm going to try polishing the barrel with JB Bore Paste and then the O-ring trick on the forearm.  Hope that improves things.  Really, the thing is so far out of whack I can't believe these little tricks to tighten up the groups are goind to make much of a difference.  I mean come on - 3" at 100 yds?  That STINKS  Heck, my smoothbore 12ga? will do that.

Maybe a different scope is called for.  I've got a cheap $60 Bushnell Sportview on it.  But, I've got other guns with cheap scopes that work pretty good.  Maybe I just got a lemon.

I once read a magazine article on 'A Good Cheap Scope' and then went out and bought a Bushnell Sportview for $80.00 (CDN) for my new CZ527. It didn't take long for me to figure out that there is no such thing as 'A Good Cheap Scope'. I wouldn't judge any rifle(or sling-shot for that matter) for accuracy that is fitted with a Sportview.

For my .223 Ultra, 50gr V-Max & Varget get me under an inch consistently if I do my part. It's got a 3-9x40 Bushnell "Trophy" scope on it -- Not the hightest quality by any means, but it does the job until I can afford a better one.

My other NEF is a .17HMR. Not a centerfire, but it'll beat the .223 at 100yds most days.

I need to go re-set the scopes on both now that temperatures are back into 3-digits here. Darn! More shooting! And the reloading...will it never end?!?  :-D

My Handi 338 Rem Ultra down loaded put 4 bullets thru the same hole at 100 yds. I guess I'd say .39 hole.

My .243 will shoot 4" groups. The only thing I have done with it is sent it back to get a trigger job. I plan to start reloading this winter, so i will start tweaking soon after.

Here's a 10 shot string @ 100 yards that I printed yesterday using 61 gr of FFg from rest on sandbags.  I'm working up loads for the DD/PRS 400 gr boolit .  My BC 1871 has a 1874 Sharps vernier mounted to the receiver and stock.

The barrel was not wiped nor did I use a blow tube during the string.

My hold was 10X using a pin head post.  Will be adjusting elevation, the globe insert and going to a 6 o'clock hold to see if the recipe does any better ...

.223 Ultra-  Consistantly under an inch.  Usually four into one hole, and one a little over a half inch away.  Every once in a while, when the planets are lined up just right, it will put them all in one hole.  This is with a 50 grain V Max and Varget.  New load with a 45 grain V Max and Blc2 seems a little better.

45-70 Govt- Will shoot 405 grain cast (Lee 405-459HB mold) bullets into one hole at 50 yards.

7MM-08 REM-  Haven't really grouped it with a lot of different handloads.  But will shoot the Seirra 120 grain soft points into just over an inch.

.204 Ruger-  Haven't shot groups yet with it.  Still working on the Gunstocks Inc custom stock that I got at the prairie dog shoot.

I must be on a roll with my Handi's because all 3 are what I call shooters.  I have a .223, .243, and a 7mm08.  The .223 shoots just a hair over .5", the .243HB shoots .5", and the 08 shoots .75.( to be honest, the .243 and the 08 have only had about 50 rounds each shot thru them.)  These are 3 shot groups and groups open a little for 5 shot groups.  I know that the guns will out shoot me and I know that you don't shoot groups at game, but this does help your confidence and that makes or breaks you in shooting.  I have been hunting deer since 1965 and the one thing that always seems to make a difference is how much confidence you have in your weapon. That is the only reason I shoot groups at a known range.  Other than that, I shoot at non-measured distances just to improve 'MY' shooting skills.  Sorry to ramble.

I can shoot my survivor .308 and the first two rounds overlap by about 1/2 of the hole size.  The 3rd round goes about 1" to the right.  When I let the barrel cool about 10 min.  It can paste another one on top of the other two.  Any ideas on how to tighten the 3d Shot up.
I have repeated this process several times.  I use a 130gr Hornady bullet, Varget, and Winchester casing and primer.

Camsdaddy, I am sorry for the delay.  Had a big roping to go to.  I shoot factory loads as I just don't have time to reload.  In my .243 I shoot 80 gr. PSP Remington.  It shoot the 100 gr. Rems. just as well.

Kart29;

Don't give up yet. I was in the same boat as you, ready to get rid of the 223 and the 44mag barrel. But these guys told ME not to give up.  And I had already put over 400 rnds. through the 223. Honestly, the O-ring and the JB Bore Paste did make a difference, a Big difference. The 223 barrel went with me out to Oklahoma on the recent paraire dog shoot and it did me proud. I used it most. So there is light at the end of the tunnel, believe me. These fellas will help you anyway they can to get your rifle to shoot.

quick;
my 223 will shoot under an inch for three at 100.
my 44 will shoot 1.5 inches for five at 100. Just yesterday I believe I found a new bullet for the 44. The Remington 180gr. JHP over H-110 and a mag CCI primer.

Thanks De41mag.  No way am I giving up now.  I don't quit that easy.  I did give it a good JB Bore Compound treatment and had it out to the range this past Saturday with some Winchester 45grn white box stuff.  Results were worse than ever and seemed to get worse as the day went on.  I'm almost positive I have a scope problem.  I'm shipping it back to Bushnell to have them check it out.  If I still can't get good accuracy when the scope comes back I'll try a different scope - maybe one from another gun that I know holds a consistent zero.

I still haven't tried the O-ring trick yet but I have a hard time thinking that would make enough of a difference.  It might help fine tune the barrel but I was sometimes missing an eight inch target this past weekend.  I don't think I'm ready for the O-ring trick yet.

I'll get her there boys.  If there's anything I am it's stubborn!

I'm still in the process of working up a load for my 22 hornet and finally managed to find some range time this morning.  I shot eight groups of three with progressively greater powder charges or different primers and managed 4 groups 1/2 to 3/4 inch.

My 308 ultra will consistently shoot 3/4" to 1" groups with Hornady sst, and Win. supreme bal. slvrtp ammo. I have shot several 1/2" groups with $7.00 a box UMC 150 FMJ ammo. Federal ammo shoots like a load of buckshot from a spreader choke. I have a 2.5 X 10 Aetec in Weaver rings. I shoot off a bag my wife made for me that fits from the trigger guard to the forearm screw. I start with clean bbl 1 or 2 foulers maybe, then do it to it. I clean with Butch's and Iosso and lube with tetra.

Previously I had advised you that my Handi shot between 1 and two inch average groups. I would like now to revise that to less than 1 inch. ( done with Winchester White Box Varmint 45 gr.'s)

How Accurated is Your Handi??
« Reply #58 on: June 23, 2005, 07:00:31 AM »
When I bought my .233 Handi over a month ago I was getting 3inch+ groups and I thought that all the banter about one inch groups was a load of nonsense!!!!  I have allot of experience shooting but nothing prepared me for the Handi. It must be shot differently and has some other characteristics that make it a challenge to master. Well after considerable effort I finally got my Handi to shoot consistently and under one inch three shot groups( AVERAGED) . This means it sometimes goes as high as 1-1/2 if I don't do my part. I've given up reloading for it because the Winchester White Box ammo shoots better than my reloads and at the same cost. Also it is important to support the gun at the hinge pin as this is where the center of gravity of the rifle is!!!!!

Free floating the barrel in my opinion is a waste of time. And the O-ring trick will not produce consistent performance over time. Don't give up because these little rifles shoot pretty good once you know the rules.

I couldn't find where to "cast my ballot", but I'd like to vote for the 1"-2" group size, for my .357mag.

I bought this rifle to use for 50 yard practice so that I could improve my offhand.  So far, I've got nearly 4000 rounds through it.  I've been shooting Winchester 158gr JHP bullets over 11.0 grains of Accurate #9.

At 50 yards this rifle gives me groups where I can not decipher individual impacts.

At 100 yards it will keep all hits in a 2" circle.

NOTE:  This is a very light load, that I chose for practice at 50 yards only, because it uses the least powder while giving me the most accuracy.  BE JUST AS CAREFUL working under the recommended load data as you would working near the top.
Just my Awf Hand comments...
