It looks like volume 1 of Elmer Keith's compiled gun notes (1961-1970) is available again. I just picked one up last night and it's a good read. I have had volume 2 for quite a while and it's good too.

I've tried finding it in the past and it wasn't available for quite a while. This is the first copy I've seen. I like it better than the second volume. I believe Keith was relying a lot on memories for the second volume, but he was still doing a lot of experimenting during the years captured in the first volume. It has a vitality to it that the second volume lacks. I paid $20 for mine, so you may be able to find it cheaper by looking around. Cabelas might have it.

By the way, it's almost worth the price of the book just to see a picture of Keith shouldering a 50 BMG rifle (he writes that it's too heavy [weight] for hunting, but it would be fine for target shooting.) There's a picture of him in full recoil with a .505 Gibbs.

And in his column on "best all around rifles" he quickly jumps to the .338 Win, .333 OKH, and .375 H&H for best all around cartridges for North American game. Most of the rest of that article is about that same column is about the .460 Weatherby and .378 Weatherby. For the person looking for good advice, he's not doing anyone any favors. But it's fun to read if you're in the know.
