Scrubbing Bubbles for cleaning barrels.
« on: June 04, 2005, 03:38:27 PM »
I sometimes use Formula 409..works great.  I just tried Scrubbing Bubbles on the bathtub, and it works just like 409...except that it foams up.  Seems like it would work great..just like expensive foaming bore cleaners.  Has anyone tried it?  I am going to try it as soon as I go out with my one of my smoke-poles next time.

It seems that just about any water-based concoction will clean BP fouling. I have a sneaky suspicion that it's the water that does it.

Uh-Oh...now I am really confused....Ha Ha...I just thought that this stuff really resembles the foaming bore cleaner that they sell in little bottles for a lot of money, but it is in a big bottle for very little money.  I better look at the label again.

1. Dimethyl benzyl ammonium chlorides 0.11%
2. Dimethyl ethylbenzyl ammonium clorides 0.11%
Inet ingredients 99.78%

Ok...I just sent an inquiry to S.C. Johnson company about this product and the the 'inert' ingredients.  I am sure that my request will 'brighten' thier day.  I assured them that it was not a prank, but that I was very serious about my info request and the intended purpose.  I also mentioned the concern that it could break-down mild steel.  I will post the reply.....this ought to be a lot of fun.

I'm probably going to twerp off some of the traditionalists but in my opinion it does not matter if we use modern solvents, house hold cleaners or soap and water. Nor does it matter if we use real B/P or Trip 7 or any other synthetic black powder. What matters is that we enjoy shooting old guns and keeping the spirit of the AMERICAN FRONTIER alive.
When my supply of Cabela's B/P solvent runs out I just may try 409 or Windex with vinegar. If it cleans the gun I don't see the difference.
Black powder is a unique experience and passion that requires more dedication than most shooting sports and shouldn't be degraded by bipartisan bias.
Most of my friends in the shooting field think I'm wasting my time with old guns, after all , the old guns aren't as efficient as modern guns. However, I'm not looking to kill anybody, I  just like to shoot guns.

My hat's off to you D.E.C in spirit your are absolultly correct.

The trouble is many new bp shooters believe it is just so easy,,that none of the learned skills from childhood of our for fathers matter,,they believe all of modern marketing more than praticed hand,,they try all of the store-bought stuff and in 3-6 monthes after trying everything in combination,,finding no accuracy or other difficulties using trad bp arms they give up. Consistancy in a learning curve is good. All of the variables listed in the quote, mixed and matched will never make a good bp shooter nore an accurate firearm reliable. Sorry, good luck :D

I love to shoot my traditional black powder guns, but clean up is a dirty pain in the butt.  If I could buy a magic wand that I could just wave I would have it in a second.
I love to share the tradition of shooting patched round balls sent down the barrel with nothing but FFFG Goex.  but they can keep the clean up.
However, that's not going to happen and as long as I have to do the cleanup, why not use plain water?  It does the job well and I always use the boiling water at the end of cleanup to heat the barrel for quick drying (plus a little alcohol at the end to displace the water. I sometimes even pour some in the barrel) I figure it's just part of the job, fun or not.
If you hear about any wands though, I want to know!!!!

I only shoot traditional style rifles and use nothing but black powder and patched balls and really don't find clean up that unpleasant or time consuming, especially with hooked breech rifles.  I can clean a rifle in about 15 minutes and really don't understand why anyone needs anything other than soapy water.  It doesn't even have to be hot water.  Soapy water pumped through a barrel will clean all fouling, no scrubbing needed.   Dry it and lube it and your done.
Do it outdoors!!

Harryo: I am mostly a modern inline guy; but I also have a T/C 54 Hawken and a Green Mountain .50 barrel for the same rifle and I have found that it is actually easier to clean than my Omega which has a scope and all that to deal with. Like you said: pop the barrel out, drop it into the laundry tub (outside) and run some soapy water through, flush, dry and lube and reinstall the barrel  ALL DONE!!!! Until I started using Black Mag'3 in my inline the cleaning procedure actually took longer with the inline.

Seams most of the complaints I here from people round here is from guys mostly shootin those white powder wonders and dont bother to clean em at all. Then they complain that it takes so long to clean BP that they need to pack a lunch and overnight bag.. . Fer the life of me I just cant figure out what these guys are doin all that time .. :?
Maybe some of you all know ???

I think what it boils down to is the ones that complain about cleaning a BP rifle, don't want to clean Any gun, be it a BP or modern.

It takes me about 15-20 minutes to clean a fullstock flintlock or a halfstock, makes no difference. Takes me about the same amount of time to clean a HP rifle, if I really clean it.  Now I mean really clean it, not wipe it off & call that cleaning one.

IMHO, if you don't have time to clean your firearm you don't need the firearm.............  Cleaning it & doing so correctly is All Part Of It.

Well said Birddog6. Proper cleaning just doesn't take much time. But I think some folks clean too well, and then have to spend too much time rustproofing. I know pyrodex shooters who have no choice, that stuff is poison to steel. But real black powder is not hard to clean. Once you have flushed out the salts, a little black remaining on the patches does not matter. Grease it up and put it away. It always works for me.
