Getting a 30-30 Need Your Pet 150gr loads
« on: June 05, 2005, 08:40:27 PM »
Hello. I have decided I cant live without a Handi 30-30. I have always had good luck with Handi's in 30-30. I do reload and have tried reloading in the past for my previous (sold) 30-30 rifles. I have never been able to equal the excellent groups I get from factory 30-30 ammo. I tried the 130gr and the 150gr hornaday. Dont know what I am doing wrong but could not get good groups. Three to five :D  inches were the norm with my handloads. It has been 10 years or longer since I played with handloading for 30-30. I dont remember what I had put together back then. I just want to cut to the chase and get one or two good deer hunting loads that will be an honest 200 to 250 yard load. Thank You in advance for your help. There are so many post on this forum it would take me 2 weeks to go through them all looking for load data on the 30-30. Has anyone chronographed factory 150gr and 170gr ammo? I would be interested to know the results.

Try this load:
Remington case
Federal 210 primer
30.5 grains IMR 3031
Nosler 150 grain Ballistic Tip
COL 2.75
2200 FPS
Works really well in my Model 158

That same load shoots very well in my model 158, Sb2, and Star Rolling Block. I've had excellant luck in just subing Remington or Speer 150 gr 30-30 bullets also. IMR 3031 and Reloder 7 are hard to beat in the 30-30.

BL-C2 or H335 perform well too.

I was shooting 33.5 grians of a milsurp, WC 846 under 150 grain bullets in my barrel. It was delivering 3/8" and 1/2" groups at 50 yards and 2360 fps.

The plain old Remington 150 Coreloct, yeah, the cheap green box stuff was the most accurate laod I ran through my barrel. It never exceeded 1/2" at 50, and was more often a single wallered out hole. I didn't  find a handload as good,bt went on to other things and sold the barrel recently. Present owner is quite happy with it.
