Hello everyone! I'm wanting to pick up a Marlin 22 Mag. I have narrowed my decision down to between the 982L and the 983S. How accurate and dependable are these rifles? The clip vs. tube deal doesn't matter to me, even though I like the idea of having 12 shots vs. 7. I'm just wanting a good squirrel rifle/ small varmit rifle. I already have a 17 and am just wanting to round out the collection. Thanks for your time and replies.

I,v got a 982vs on order,I want the clip so I can shoot the Remington premiers,or at least try to(their the plastic pointed tip bullets).Everything I'v read about the Marlin 22 mag has been good,not as accurate as the 22lr,but you should be able to find a bullet that will shoot an inch at 100 yards.When I first entered the market for a 22 mag I wanted the CZ American but after reading awhile it became clear the marlin was it.The CZ reputation isnt as good on the 22mag as it is on their 22lr.It seems its possible no matter whose gun you buy theres a chance it wont shoot anything very well,but the Marlin is less likely to let you down as the others.If it wont shoot send it back.

I have a 982 stainless synthetic with the bull barell I absolutely love it. We have ground hogs here in Pa. and this is a very efective rim fire on them, alot of the local farmers prefer if you use rimfire rifles around the farm areas. I have a harris bipod that attaches to the front sling swivel makes it quite nice to hide in the tree lines and pick off hogs up to 160 yrds or so. Its quiet enough I often get a second try at one if I miss. All three of my kids shoot it with proficiently. From a bench with the bipod my youngest loves to shoot the little water ballons kids buy for water ballon fights. They only fill to about 4" diamater we hang them from a board with string usually a dozen or so. A hit is a splat no guessing keeps it fun for all of them. Most all shells seem to group around 1" at 100 yrds for my rifle. If the acuracy starts to get bad it needs the barrel cleaned. I only have one two small gripes about this rifle one the saftey is stiff small fingers have a tough time clicking it on and off. Second I have the bull barrel on mine with a synthetic sling it wants to slide barrel down when you carry it slung on the shoulder, this I could alievate by buying a different sling but the barrel's weight is what causes this. I had a Marlin model 57M for quite a while. It was a strange rifle in that it was a lever action but had a flat bottom, varmint stock and a 24" barrel. It was quite accurate for a lever action. One inch groups were common at a 100yds. I don't imagine there are many of them around today. I don't think it was all that popular, but I sure liked it. Best wishes.

Hi, i have the 882 ssv with the heavy barrel and mine shoot well with winchester supreme 34 gr. but is very capricious; when i just clean it, it was not accurate until it have shot around 20 round, at that stage, the better accuracy. After that, maybe after 50-60 rounds, it start to be worse.
I made around one inch @ 100. That's why i will change it for a 17, hmr or hm2(not sure yet). Seem's like these 17 was less capricious.
