Scout mount for a K31
« on: June 08, 2005, 12:56:57 PM »
Well today I bit the bullet and ordered on of Darrels K31 Scout Scope Mounts. I thought hard over Darrell's and the St. Marie one that fits over the reciever but I really like scout mounts and since I am left handed and the scope is on the right side I figured I would not get a good cheek weld with the scope that way.  I like Scout mounts and really do not want to alter my Swiss rifle like I did my Swede so I paid the reasonable price and bought Darrell's mount. Now I got to keep a eye out for a scope for it.  :)
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

WEll I have heard nothing but good reports on his mounts so I am positive I will be satisfied. Today is Wed I would guess it will take until the end of next week to get it. Then get a scope and mount it ect but I will post results as soon as I get it, get a scope found and mounted, and shoot it. There is a gun show the end of the month here so I am hopeing to find a reasonable pistol scope.  Jim

Jim,

You got web addresses for both Darrell and St Marie?  If so, could you post them.  I like the scout mount but already have an 8x57 with one.  Was thinking of puting an over the receiver mount on my k-31.  Any help would be appreciated.

You bet Ray Here goes.

For Darrells Scout Mount:

For the St. Marie no gunsmithing mount:
Here is the info but you buy them at Grafs or Brownells.

http://www.swissrifles.com/~swiss-sights/

For Darrells Mount you send him a email and he will give you the order info and like I said for the ST. Marie Mounts you can get them as it says on the web site I posted either at Grafs or Brownells.

Darrell's  scout mount is 60 bucks the St Marie one is a Hundred. Jim

I think Midway may have the St. Marie mount too.  I have the utmost respect for Pierre St. Marie and am sure his mount is a great one, but the off center mount just won't work for me.  If I make this leap, it will be to a scout mount and Darrel seems to be the only game in town.

Directly over the reciever won't work because of the straight up ejection of the k31.  The St. Marie mount is offset to solve the problem and is probably the only solution to such a system.  A brass deflector and a high mount could probably be custom fitted, but personally I find the idea distasteful :(

Thats why I went with Darrell's mount it has a good reputation on the web and it also is 40 bucks cheaper than the ST Marie mount which means I can use that towards a scope.   Also with the offset ( ST Marie) I just figured it would not work good for leftys but if your right handed it should work great from what I have heard. Besides I just like scout mount setups. They do not block your view and are fast and easy to use. Jim

Well, I'm all exctited about hearing the shooting report!!

There is still time for me to get set up with a Darrel Mount and scope for my Oct cow elk hunt.  The k31 has proven itself on elk with the MOJO sight but the scope would sure be nice.  I'm torn :-D

After I saw it - Really don't like the offset mount.

Don't need another scout mount but may go ahead and put one on my K-31 anyway.  But think I'll fix it up with the iron sights first and go from there.  Thanks.

Darrel's Mount

I mounted a Darrels's mount on my K-31. Using an inexpensive NC Star scope (2X7), to my amazement I was getting 3 shot groups of .5" with that K-31.  This rifle was getting me 2", 5 shot groups with the iron sights which is amazing for my old bi-focal wearing eyes. The K-31 is an amazing rifle.
Hunting and fishing are not matters of life or death. They are much more important than that.

Darrell is out of the mounts at the moment. I guess I got lucky and got one of the last ones in stock. Any way From what I read he puts your name on a list and when he gets 30 orders he makes up a bunch and sends them out which may take 12 weeks. I will say with the interest in these rifles and the Mosins I would bet he would have a batch sooner than that. I would contact him and see if you are interested in one. Jim

I have heard they are steel so they should be good. Not a bad price for a steel mount. Darrell's is Aluminum but supposed to be real high grade alloy. "heavy duty, but still light, because they are machined from solid High-Strength Aircraft Aluminum Alloy Barstock. Stronger than standard steel, but only ~1/3 the weight." I think Steel would still  be stronger but I ordered Darrells mount as it has a good reputation. I have heard nothing bad about the S&K mounts so they should be good. Jim
