Mini range report
« on: June 08, 2005, 01:22:24 PM »
Went to the range today, shot the scoped 45-70 and the 243 Ultra. The load for the 45-70 was H4198 and the 300gr Nosler partition. A friend had his chrono set up and let me run one of my loads over it, 2318fps. I was still working up in .2gr powder increments, that load of 55.4grs shot  a 1¼" 3 shot group at 100yds, after he left I ended up working up to 56.8grs and called it good when 3 shots were touching at 100yds!

The 243 didn't show as much promise shooting H380 and 65gr Vmax, best group was right at 1" with 44gr, above that accuracy dropped off. I also shot some 55gr CT ballistic silvertips, but my starting load was too hot, shot 1" groups, but caused the barrel release to be "sticky" when opening it. The primers were also slightly cratered, but none stuck in the chamber. I'm going to back off a couple grains and try those again with a little less powder unless I find that the powder capacity increased enough in the once fired stuff that my start load isn't close to being compressed. Book max is 53gr, I started at 49gr. This was shooting in new winchester brass, powder capacity was restricted since I was compressing powder at less than 51gr, so I think I'll just neck size these once fired cases and see if the powder capacity will improve and hopefully reduce pressure some. The nosler books shows the 53gr max load as the only compressed load.

What bullet?? I'm hoping to stay with the H powders, they're said to be temperature insensative and in my hunting areas the temps could be 80 degrees or 25 degrees depending on the time of year or day!..

Quick:
Just to be sure you're clear, there are only a few of the Hogdon powders that are temperature insensitive.  They call them "Extreme" powders.  I can't remember all of them right off , but go to http://www.hogdon.com to check them out.  Good luck.

yea Varget is one of them and i use it in my .308 Ultra, still tweaking but 1"@100yrds so far. As if you wanted to read all this but heres the list/descriptions

Our exclusive line of extruded rifle powders – Hodgdon Extreme™ – was developed to give shooters consistent performance, load after load, in even the most extreme heat and cold.

H4227™ is the fastest of our Extreme Extruded rifle propellants. Because of its' burning speed, it doubles as a magnum pistol powder. Top applications are the 22 Hornet, 357 Maximum, 357 Magnum, 44 Magnum and the mighty 454 Casull. For stability under extreme conditions, H4227 is the top choice. Available in 1 lb. & 8 lb. containers. Take the Extreme Tour.

H4198 This Extreme Extruded propellant has gone through some changes since its inception, all the time maintaining the same important burning speed of the past. The kernels were shortened for improved metering and necessary elements were added to make it extremely insensitive to hot/cold temperatures. H4198 is outstanding in cartridges like the 222 Remington, 444 Marlin and the 7.62 X 39. Available in 1 lb. & 8 lb. containers. Take the Extreme Tour.

H322™ This powder has won more bench rest matches than all other propellants combined. It provides match grade accuracy in small and medium capacity cartridges like the 223 Remington, 6mm PPC and the 7mm TCU. As a fine extruded powder, it flows through powder measures with superb accuracy. Available in 1 lb. & 8 lb. containers. Take the Extreme Tour.

BENCHMARK™ As the name implies, this Extreme Extruded propellant was developed for precision cartridges. As such, it is ideally suited for benchrest and small varmint cartridges like the 6mm PPC, 22 PPC, 6mm BR, 223 Rem. and 222 Rem. Additionally, it performs superbly in the 308 Winchester with light match bullets like the 147 gr. and 155 gr. versions. With small, easy metering granules, competitors will love how it flows through progressive presses. Available in 1 lb. & 8 lb. containers. Take the Extreme Tour.

H4895™ is a most versatile rifle powder. This member of the Extreme Extruded line powder is great for 17 Remington, 250-3000 Savage, 308 Winchester and 458 Winchester, to name just a few. It is amazingly accurate in every cartridge where it is listed in our data. It had its origin in the 30-06 as a military powder and was the first powder Bruce Hodgdon sold to the loading public. Available in 1 lb. & 8 lb. containers. Take the Extreme Tour.

VARGET™ The first of Hodgdon's revolutionary Extreme Extruded Powders, VARGET features small extruded grains for uniform metering, insensitivity to hot/cold temperatures and higher energy for improved velocities over other powders in its burning speed class. Easy ignition and clean burning characterize other features that translate into superb accuracy, higher scores and more clean, one shot kills. Outstanding performance and velocity can be obtained in such popular cartridges as the 223 Remington, 22-250 Remington, 308 Winchester, 30-06, 375 H&H and many more. Available in 1 lb. & 8 lb. containers. Take the Extreme Tour.

H4350 This Extreme Extruded propellant is a burning speed that has been known to shooters for decades. During that time, Hodgdon has modernized H4350 by shortening the grains for improved metering and making it insensitive to hot/cold temperatures. H4350 is great in such cartridges as the 243 Winchester, 6mm Remington, 270 Winchester, 338 Winchester Magnum and many more. For magnums with light to moderate weight bullets, it can't be beat! Available in 1 lb. & 8 lb. containers. Take the Extreme Tour.

H4831™ & H4831SC™ It is probably safe to say more big game has been taken with H4831 than any other powder. Bruce Hodgdon was the first supplier to introduce this popular burning rate in 1950. Since that time it has become a favorite for cartridges like the 270 Winchester, 25-06 Remington, 280 Remington and 300 Winchester Magnum. As an Extreme Extruded propellant it shares the fine quality of insensitivity to hot/cold temperatures, as well as superb uniformity from lot to lot.

H4831SC - Ballistically, this Extreme Extruded powder is the exact copy of H4831. Physically, it has a shorter grain size, therefore, the designation SC or short cut. The shorter, more compact kernels allow the powder to flow through the powder measures more smoothly, helping to alleviate the constant cutting of granules. With the smoother flow characteristics comes more uniform charge weights, while the individual grains orient more compactly, creating better loading density. Available in 1 lb. & 8 lb. containers. Take the Extreme Tour.

H1000™ This very slow burning Extreme Extruded powder is perfect for highly overbored magnums like the 7mm Remington Magnum, 7mm STW and the 30-378 Weatherby. In addition, with heavy bullets, H1000 gives top velocity and performance in such cartridges as the 6mm-284, 257 Weatherby, 270 Winchester, and 300 Winchester Magnum. In a short period of time this powder has achieved considerable notoriety among long range match shooters. Available in 1 lb. & 8 lb. containers. Take the Extreme Tour.
RETUMBO This magnum powder was designed expressly for the really large overbored cartridges such as the 7mm Remington Ultra Magnum, 300 Remington Ultra Magnum, 30-378 Weatherby Magnum, etc. RETUMBO adds 40-100 fps more velocity to these cartridges when compared to other normal magnum powders. In addition, it is an Extreme Powder, making it perfect for big game hunting under all types of conditions. Available in 1 lb. & 8 lb. containers. Take the Extreme Tour.
H50BMG As the name implies, this new generation Extreme Extruded rifle propellant is a clean burning powder designed expressly for the 50 caliber BMG cartridge. Because it shares the same technology as VARGET, H50BMG displays a high degree of thermal stability in temperature extremes. Tests have conclusively proven that H50BMG yields very low extreme spreads in velocity and pressure. All this translates into small groups at extended ranges! Available in 1 lb. & 8 lb. containers. Take the Extreme Tour

That's some good shooting Quick...I thought you would like that Nosler load...it's never let me down at all...and it puts deer down quick as well...and has been the most accurate load I've ever shot in the 45-70...

Hi Quick,

I am using the nosler 95 gr ballistic tip for my .243 handi. Both my handi rifles are fairly new and I have mostly been playing with my .223 ultra. I am getting an inch group or less with on a consistent basis so I just thought i would leave it alone. I may try some more different loads for the .243 though this summer.

Thanks Mac!! :D

Norse, I've got a 100gr load in the Federal Classics, it shoots extremely well, but I want a varmint/predator load for some long range shooting. I may have to use the 100gr if I can't get the light bullets to shoot as well, though...

Hey Quick try a faster burning powder for lighter bullets it might help a little, it does in the 25-06 with lighter bullets (I know they are not the same animal but if you compare them pressure wise and ballistically they are very close) I also shoot a 243 but it is ruger ss mk2 one of my favorite loads is a seirra 70grn match bullet with imr4064& imr3031 powder, very accurate. I have found out that neck sizing for a handi can be tricky for that matter so is full length sizing if you can CHECK BULLET RUN OUT OR CHECK THE NECK OF YOUR REFORMED CASES FOR RUN OUT it took me awhile to find it, but I got my runout to less than .001 and it will show on the target. Don't you just loves these guns, they make you shoot your other guns even better.
