243 Accuracy........
« on: June 11, 2005, 11:59:25 AM »
Does anyone have a bull barrel 243? How is the accuracy? I have a synthetic Handi 243 and it stinks. Have tried all the tricks and it just has a mind of it's own. My 22 Hornet and 45-70 are very accurate, but I want a good accurate 243 ( or 6mm Remington if they would make it!) Help! :(

How much and what type of ammo have you tried?  Got to give details here for us to help.

poncaguy:

I've had a Handi 22" and Ultra-light 20". Neither would provide the 5 shot groups I was looking for. I think it was a matter of barrel contour. If I try it again, it will be with a Ultra 24". For now I'm shooting a Remington 700vs, (75 Bal-Tips/45 gr Win 760/Rem case/CCI 200)and loving it. When the wind starts pushing my 223s and 22-250 around the p-dog town, I go to it.

I have tried 100 grain Remington and 80 grain Wihchster so far..............I don't reload yet, but soon as wifey gets rid of some of her "junk" when she has a garage sale so I'll have room, I plan to start.

My handi .243 standard barrel shoots .75 to 1 inch groups with reloads. I did use the o ring to free float the barrel. Without it it shot 1.5 in to 2 inch groups. I am going to play with some more powders though. I am pretty happy with  my  handi .243  :-). I would think a bull barrel would be a shooter though.

Thinking of getting a Ultra Varmit in 243.....bull barrels seem to shoot better in Handi's ( and my Rossi 223 ) or the Handi Bull Barrel Varmit 243. Anyone have these and how do they shoot?

My 243 has a bull barrel it can put 8 bullets through the same hole with very little expansion to the hole at a hundred yards. it does not like bullets heaver than 95GR's but does real well with winchester 80GR soft points and varget powder.

I've been trying to find an accurate factory load for my bull barrel .243.  I've been blasting through lots of factory ammo in the process.  The best I've found so far is the Winchester 80 gr PSP.  Sometimes it groups less than an inch, sometimes more.  Although Winchester sells it as a varmint load, I've been told it works quite well on deer.

I've resigned myself to the fact that I will probably have to reload for this gun to find a load that consistently shoots 1" or less; however, I haven't tried all the tricks yet, nor all the factory loads.
