i'm 19 years old, and have been buying guns left and right....not rich (work 50 hours a week) the last one being a COLT 1911 GOLD CUP sligtly customized. Stainless frame, custom grips, trigger work, beaver tail grip safety, trillium night sights, wilson combat accessories....etc. what is a gun like this worth? i'm freinds with my dealer, and it was from his own personal collection, so he gave it to me for $700, did i do as good as i think that i did?

Sounds like a strange configuration for a Gold Cup because of the fixed sights. I wonder what kind of ammo it's intended to shoot. Most Gold Cups are used for bullseye shooting or similar shooting with light target loads. It looks like this one is configured for full power loads. You may want to get a new recoil spring for it just so you know what weight it is and so that you don't batter the gun by firing heavy loads in a gun with a light spring. $700 is a good price if it's in good shape and the gunsmithing is of good quality.

Sendero270 - what state do you live in that allows 19 year olds to purchase handguns? I don't know of any state that allows 19 year olds to purchase handguns. What reputable dealer would sell a personally owned handgun to a 19 year old without facing the possibility of jail time? Moderator.

Mikey,

In PA and many other states, an 18-20yo may buy one privately, but not at a FFL.

PA's laws allow private transfers at FFL's and sheriff's offices of handguns to those 18-20.

Federal only prohibits FFL sales to those younger than 21, not private transfers or sales. A state may prohibit private transfers or sales there-after.

knight0334 - thanks for the information. The post sounded a bit suspicious to a couple of us and I was looking for clairification. I know that in many, if not most, states, you can't purchase a handgun until you're 21. If PA has more lax rules, that's a different story. Thanks again. Mikey.

Yes, I agree. The post did sound suspicious, but I gave the guy the benefit of doubt that he may be in a 18+ state and did a private purchase.

Questor, I personally think $700 may have been a little too much for a Goldcup. ..but that may depend on local new/used prices and availability.
