Spoke yesterday with a fellow at nats.
Motl won first day  Hunter and Lawton took Std. Don't remember the scores.
Cathy and Agustin were close behind.
Didn't get any more details.

I heard that Sanchez shot 40 yesterday, the first one in Nationals history (?). Lawton is doing well. Obviously, I'd like to know more, too, as news filters in.

The first 40 at a national smallbore silhouette match, was in '88 at Fort Worth RPC.  On the 3rd day Troy Lawton finished with a 40 on the pigs.

Newsflash from the Nationals:

It was a cozy 106 degrees at the Ben Avery Range yesterday, but it was the scores that were hot!

Agustin Sanchez took first place in Standard smallbore rifle with a score of 115/120.
Daily scores of 37, 40 and 38.

Troy Lawton took first place in Hunter Rifle smallbore. I do not remember the scores, but I think Bill Motl took second and Augustin took third. Agustin shot the high score of the day with a 38, but was well behind Bill and Troy and could not catch them.

We rest and exchange gear today so we can get it on with High Power Rifle. The forecast is for temperatures of 108-110 degrees in Phoenix, which means about 16-108 degrees out at the range. It will be interesting to see how quickly the folks from back east learn NOT to handle their rifles from the barrel after shooting their 10 shots...

OK, Here's the skinny on the Nationals...

Hunter Rifle Smallbore:

1st Place: Troy Lawton 104
2nd Place: Cathy Winstead 102
3rd Place: Agustin Sanchez 101


Standard Rifle Smallbore:

1st Place: Agustin Sanchez 115
2nd Place: Troy Lawton 107
3rd Place Nicholas Flood (Ireland) 104

High Woman was Cathy Winstead and High Senior was Lones Wigger.
High Subjunior was Reann Wilson

Adrian Tovar, from El Paso, Texas won a Kimber rifle that was raffled-off yesterday. If anyone deserved to win it it was Adrian. He has to report for another tour in Iraq before the end of the year. Adrian started in AA Class Hunter  and ended taking 2nd place overall in AAA Hunter. Way to go!

Carl Wurster won a synthetic rifle stock donated by McMillan and there were many other interesting door prizes awarded.

Wish y'all were over here for high power!!!

Just heard from Keith Cairns that Agustin shot a 39 in hp standard to win match 1. He didn't have results from hp hunter match 1.
AFAIK Agustin was out of the country and unable to practice until just before nationals...

I think he's just taking advantage of the fact that I decided not to go to Phoenix this year and he's making the best of it! :-D

(BTW: If you believe that, call me immediately -- I'm in a small financial bind and might sell one of the bridges that I own in New York. You can make a killing...) 8)

Just talked with Bill Motl in PHX.
Agustin shot 39/36 in std rifle through match 2.
30/36 in hunter through match 2. (Lost match 1 to Wm Zander in a shootoff.)
12 point lead in std and 5 in hunter at this point.
Apparently, conditions were tough this afternoon for hunter and the rest of the field faded...

One bit of drama: A shooter -- who shall be nameless from me ;-) -- had a pressure excursion in the heat while using one of the small 6.5s and blew the floorplate, follower and spring out of his rifle while checking zero on the bench with his ram load. Good thing he wasn't in position. (Having fingers on both hands is helpful when you're getting dressed in the morning...) As I heard it, you have to give him points for tough as he changed his ram load, taped the floorplate back on and returned to the line! His load was worked up in hot conditions but not at PHX -- which a friend describes as: "Just a BIT warmer than the 7th level of Hell!"

I took a few.  The above link will take you to a pic of Benton Gun Club's very own Karl Stephens.  Karl had a little trouble finding his relay on day two of the Smallbore Silhouette Championships.  Guess we need to add another AKA to the Krossfire Karl nickname he earned in Florida this year.  No show Stephens comes to mind.
