I would absoloutly love to have an ar-15 or one of its variations...
i have huge interest for Armalite AR10T (even tho its not ar-15, but this one is the 300 Rem short mag, 24") .... I WOULD LOVE TO OWN ONE but, my bank account would disagree with me ( i think its a little over 2000$)

Well my two cents is the only reason why I own a AR over a M1a is because I can't afford a M1a but don't get me wrong I do like the AR as well but the M1a would be my choice I would like to try a AR in the 6.8mm caliber I think something a little heavier then the 223 would be great.

Old Griz - Did you end up buying one or the other? or are you still thinking about it?
I vote for the M1A.  Have you handled either?  I would bet, that with a nomiker like "Old Griz", you would be best pleased with a heavy, solid weapon of steel and wood, rather than something made of aluminum and plastic that rattles and feels like a toy.  I know many swear by them, but after handling my brothers "black rifle" I was very unimpressed.  Besides, since you have a .223 already, a .308 makes sense.

:D For a better understanding of the effectiveness of the "black gun" go to "Handgun General Discussion" fourm click on "9mm please x-plain" and read my post from the marine who is serving in Iraq.

I own a couple of ARs they are fun guns and very accurate, but for a SHTF situation my first choice would be one of my AK-47s.

I own both and would have to say that the M1A is the better of the two..The .30 cal bullet will out shine the .223 almost always, just look at the ballistic coeficients. Plus, I like the gas system on the M1A, I've shook my head many times wondering why it was decided that blowing all the gasses in the M16 into the breech area was O.K.....I've carried the M16 twice now in Iraq and can say without a doubt that sand is one of its worst enemies no matter how much you clean it and try to keep it clean. A few grains of sand can be enough to cause it to lock up....For range work and hunting the AR15 is fine...But for an all around rifle go with the M1A..I know I've hurt some of the AR15 guys feelings but, suck it up, Semper Fi
