204 Range report
« on: June 15, 2005, 07:14:07 AM »
Got my .204 Handi back from factory yesterday. Had to have action tightend up. They did a nice job!!
Went to range this A. M. What a nice surprise!!! 1/2-5/8's at 100 yds. 32 V-max. Did the o-ring thing and rested gun on hinge pin when firing. Guess I'll sell my Savage.
        .222 Rem. mag case's
        32 Horn. V-Max
         BL-C2 powder/ 1/2 gr. over max
        CCI bench rest primer's
         OAL 2.375 :-D  :-D  :-D

Thanks for the report.

Are you having to do anything to your cases besides size them in the 204 die?

Cheatermk3:
I fire formed First, but I didn;t use bullet;s!! Let me explain.

Make sure the .222 mag. case's will chamber in your gun.
Deprime with a depriming die. Reprime.
Use 5-8 gr. of a pistol powder. I used 8 gr. of clay's.
With a funnel put some cream of wheat in case. Compress that with a punch or a drill bit. Do this 2-3 time's until almost full. Fill last little bit with crisco. SHOOT OUTSIDE!!!!!
One problem I had doing this was I ruined 1/2 my case's. Primer pocket's expanded. A lot!! Next time I'll just use bullet's.
To do this, back your .204 die out so as to size about 1/2 of neck to 204 dia. Load as normal and shoot to fire form.
        Hope this isn't to confusing???

Road King,
I wanted to know if you had to ream or turn the necks of your cases.

Your technique of fireforming is producing dangerously excessive pressures if your primer pockets are being expanded to the point that they won't hold a primer.

Your cases will chamber without the necks being fully sized??

Cheatermk3:
You have to nothing to the neck. Follow step's in Quick's post.
Your right about the pressure I was building. I would us 1/2 of the charge I used if I do it again. Guy's supposed to give me some 222 mag. case's.

Thanks guys.  Will that method work in a Handi? will the action lockup on the crush-fitted case?

I don't hav a Handi in 204 yet and availability of cases is a big reason Craig and I have shied away from the 204.  I can see this method working in a bolt gun I guess but in a Handi?

Cheatermk3:
All my fireforming was done in my HANDI. No problem on closing or anything. As you probably know the .204 was designed after the .222 mag. case. Just have to fire form to move the shoulder forward.
       Good luck. :-)  :-)
