Buffalo Bore 44 Mag +P+

Just bought a box of .44 Mag +P+  340 grain LBT (over 1400 FPS).  Box specifies certain firearms and mine (Ruger SBH) was not listed.  I went to Buffalo Bore's site and they say I can use it, but must turn the cylinder on unfired rounds.   Theory being that my cylinder is too short for such a long bullet.  They seem to spin fine in my cylinder, although I have not shot them yet.  Anybody shed any daylight on what they might be saying?>

It may be that the bullets may back out a little and prevent the cylinder
from turning. Thats the only thing i can think of. Maybe some one will come in and add some thing that i have missed. I have shot them in my SBH with no problems, Kicks like a mule though. good luck.......Joe.........

Sounds to me like they way you to turn the cylinder on unfired cases to make sure the cylinder will rotate. If the bullet is to long you will not be able to shoot them. That is what I got from the post.

What they mean is this. If you load six and fire less than six you should pull those and have one of them first up next cylinder full. What they are basically saying is this. Do not leave the same rounds in the cylinder unfired thru several firings of others.

These are heavy recoil loads and the recoil can move the bullets a wee bit. If you only barely have room for them to start with and they move it can lock up the cylinder. So far I've never had this happen in my guns.

So they WILL function in my standard SBH?!? I understood it that the cylinder would not rotate due to the OAL.
Oh well I got some 400s for the .480 anyway

You just might try the Garrett 310gr for what ever it is you are after. This round/load is designed for the RSBH and functions most well.
Those who use the SBH for hunting and are true Ruger users, swear by the Garrett round.

This 310gr load is a bear and pig load. For deer, I use 180gr up to 240gr loads. I reload, but I BUY the Garrett rounds.

Give them a try, you just might like what you have shoot. By the way, I have not tried the 330gr load, I just do not need that much 'thump'. AND, be sure to put on your Walker ear-muffs.

I just might add that a similiar warning is given for the 330gr Garrett load for the SBH. But, I do know of some who have taken life in peril and fired the round. I would not.

I have always felt (being a reloader) that a warning is for the intelligent and not the lame of mind. God gave us a brain to facilitate our own safety and it is up to us to use it.

As to the Ruger SBH .44 mag, in my little group of hunter friends, we have taken. . . deer, feral pig, pig, black bear, elk, moose, varmints and lots of range targets. The Garrett 310gr load is the largest any of us have used, but then again, we are practiced handgun hunters.

IF, you need bigger, get a gun!! But, I fully believe if you will try the Garrett 310gr load, you will be totally satisfied with the SBH as a hunting weapon. This is a very accurate round in the hands of a 'shooter'.

For the life of me I can't understand what a 340gr. +P+ cartridge in a .44 mag. is good for on the N. American continent.  If you want to go brown bear hunting in Alaska get an S&W 500 or similar monster gun.  Cape buffalo hunting is few and far between north of the Mexican border!
