Remington 7400 Just got back from the range.

My son boughat a new one in 06 the scope is not much. But, we sighted it in abd started sghooting Pop bottles at various ranges up to 225 yds, I was amazed we could hit them !  I even shot a few milk jugs at 300, plenty good for any deer hunting we do. The rifle worked without a hitch. We used Remington 150 grn corelokts.So why do people shun them and call them innacurate jamo matics ?

  I would like to reload for this rifle and I have smal base dies but I'm still confused as to what powder to use in a semi- I was thinking of 4064. Could any of you recommend some loads that work reliabily in a semi ?

I believe most of the feedback you here about Remington semi-autos to be second hand rumours and etc....

Granted the 7400 does have problems like mine has had, but once I got them ironed out, it's a sweet shooter like yours.

Concerning my new Remington 7400 in 30-06:

Initially, the first 50 rounds produced jams every third round, so I went to work on it by bedding the action / stock / installing a LimbSaver Barrel De-Resonator / adjusting the trigger to 3 lbs., and dry-firing / working the action 1,000 times.

A major and very thorough cleaning of the action and chamber was performed. Did I say take your time and pay close attention to detail in cleaning the action / chamber / bolt?

Afterwards, the 7400 30-06 has not jammed in the last 400 rounds and is shooting groups that vary between 7/8" and 1 1/8" off a benchrest and 1 3/4" to 2" groups offhand - using 180-gr. Federal Solid Base rounds.

Speer Hot Core 165-gr. were slightly more accurate and shot the smaller groups, with the 180-gr.'s being the largest, but not my a large margin.

Will try some Nosler Ballistic Tips and AccuBonds next.

P.S. Groups definitely opened up when the barrel's hot, but no accuracy problems in firing a quick 4-round magazine from a cold barrel, as in the worst case hunting situation.

I'll second most of what 147 said. Some initial problems just getting it figured out, but it seems to be running fine now. I have not done any accuracy work on mine. Jams and rough cycling are eliminated by proper use of the chamber brush. Shoot too fast and it gets heated up, stringing shots out vertically (on mine anyway). Perfectly acceptable accuracy for hunting, but it's not a benchrest rifle. Any jams on mine were during the "figuring out how to load it" period, as there is a procedure that works best. No jams occured during firing.

Thanks so much. I guess the kid got lucky. But, he had a used .270 several years ago that gave no problems and shot consistant 1 1/4 3 shot groups. We let the bbl cool about 15 min between shots. I once had a model 4 that gave no trouble and also shot well. Wish I could find another one !  Still could use some good load info. is 52/4064/150 power point too much ?
