Barrel for JC Higgins Model 50 in .270
« on: June 17, 2005, 12:32:01 AM »
I've just inherited a really nice JC Higgins Model 50 in .270. This is a really nice FN Mauser action rifle. The thing is, I would like to have it rebarrel it for 30-06 or .308 as I have no experience with .270

Where should I look for a barrel? Would anyone have old JC Higgins barrels from (for) the 50's?

And what type threading does this rifle barrel have?

Thanks.

For what its worth i would leave it alone unless it doesn't shoot.  I have three of these actions 2 customed to 9.3 and 458, but i have left the last one as an -06.  The 270 is a great hunting cartridge and will serve you well.  Go out and buy a box of hornadys for it take it to the range and shoot it.  Then get back to us and tell us how it shot ( I think you will be suprised).

BTW the FN actions are commercial Mauser 98 large ring.  As such they will accept most of the 98 parts including a barrel.  But try shooting it first and $15 worth of ammo will let you know wether or not you need to spend $400 or so rebarreling it.

Amen to that!  That's a lovely rifle and if it shoots well the 270 is a great round..  Try several brands of ammo and bullet weights and I bet you'll be surprised,.,
