:roll: I just obtained a Remington 700 in 17 Remington. Looking for information as to what is working for you in this cartridge. Also wondering if anybody out there is using the 17 for coyotes and how well it is working for you. I've done a bit of reloading but am interested in knowing if there are any special tricks to reloading and making this cartridge shoot well.

For reloading: Hope you have small fingers.

Steve pretty much covered it! I had a 700 BDL years ago and I hope you are a much more patient person than I was as it drove me crazy, many dropped bullets, cut and sore fingers, to me it was the most dificult cartridge to load and I never got any better accuracy out of it than I was getting out of factory ammo, I know of people who swear by it, I just swore AT IT, but I honestly believe I didnt give it my best effort, all info. I had burned up in my gunshop fire a few years ago so I cant give you anything I tried to help, good luck and let us know how it is going.

I'm no expert but been shooting the 17rem ever since it came before that the 17x222 plus other wildcats. Keep the velocity around 3850 to 3950fps for the best groups and that is around 23to23.8gr/IMR4320 with a 25gr bullet. I've taken afew coyotes always had to use a follow up shoot. As to range 200/300yds good PD rifle alot of action on hits. As to cleaning good rod I use either Dewey or Bore-Tec get a good bore guide the best one is a lucas he makes an insert that fits the rod less chance of bending things. At max load your going to foul the barrel alot more than if doing a mild load just nature of the beast, my loads are around 3900fps and I can go about 50/70rd before I have to run a patch. www.sinclairintl.com has about all the cleaning things you would need for the 17cal, Hoehn Sales @ 636 745 8144 handles Lucas bore guides. I's stay with 25gr bullets from Berger or Hornady I've only used the 25gr so cann't comment on the lighter or heavier ones. Only thing I'll say negative about the 17 Rem is all the bad stories you have or will heard about the 17rem is due to max load or seating the bullet into the lands the factory 17 Rem likes alittle bullet jump. I have owned at least 1 and up to 3 .17 rems since 1985. I will never be with out one. I have shot 2-3000 rounds total from them and have loaded all but the first 100 rounds during that time. It will drop a coyote with authority. It will totally vaporize a pond turtle. We dont have Prairie dogs around here. so my fun is on the turtles. As for Bang flops. It will deliver. Yes I have had some runners with the .17, but I have also had a runner with the 30-06. I have prob shot more coyotes with my 17s than all my other varmint rifles total. As for loading. Yes it is a little more finicky than .22 and above. You have to have a special .17 funnel made by RCBS. Dont just dump the powder in the funnel. pour it into the side and it will swirl down like flushing a toilet, Most of the people that bad mouth the 17 just never got to know it. As for a load use IMR4320 with the 25 grain bullets. Max out at 25 grains and it will shoot.

The .17 is the most fur friendly cal. on the market. I have a .17 AH, a .17-223 and a .17 Rem. I have yet to shoot a coyote with any of them, but I would not hesitate to use my .17 AH on them out to 150 yrds. I did shoot a big dog, abt 100 lb., with my .17 Rem. nd he dropped like a wet rag with 1 shot in the chest with a 25 gn. bullet. And as for the wind drift, it`s not as bad as the .223 or similar rounds. The guys that say it bad are the ones that have never shot them, great round.

Go to www.coyotegods.com they live and breath 17 cal, to the point of being a little annoying (sort of like Mac Marines

), but they do know 17's.

I have a Remington 700BDL and like it a lot, but I feel it doesn't much like me. This rifle has given me more heartache than any three other rifles I own. I've shot groups as small as .264" (5 at 100yds.) and 4 other groups, none of which has cracked an inch. I have never been able to get it to group consistently. I clean hell out of this rifle as it copper fouls rather heavily. It merely seems to have a mind all its own. Just one mans opinion. Best wishes.

ya know something. Up to just a few weeks to a month ago i had no idea there was a .17 Remington cartridge. THe only .17 i knew was HMR and HM2, no .17 Rem centerfire i knew of.
