I caught a pig!!
« on: June 19, 2005, 03:01:54 PM »
Well, actually, I caught one napping on a hillside in the warm sun and was rude enough to shoot it without any warning whatsoever.    The guide told me the shot was about 85 yards, I have a lot of trouble guestimating distance once I leave the range with all them nice signs!  This all happened in Monterey County, BTW, here in the PRC and the guide, out of King City, was Mark Williams who did a good job of getting me onto a hog on my last chance before heading home.  I used my Winchester Modle 70 30-06 loaded with a 200 gr. Speer Grand Slam stoked to about 2700 fps.  The pig was laying down pointed away from me at about 45 degrees and I put the bullet into its neck and it exited about two inches below the left ear.  There was NO MOVEMENT whatsoever from the critter, not even a flinch, for about 15 seconds and then it rolled down hill into the bottom of the gulch, about 20 feet I'd say.  As soon as my shot rang out a whole pack of pigs flew out of that gulch and headed uphill towards us.  Mark took one with a 300 WSM using a Winchester 150 gr. Ballistic Silver Tip.  That bullet ruined so much meat it was practically criminal.  Mark had never used that gun/bullet combination before and has sworn off ballistic tips for hogs.  In a day or two I'll have some photos posted on a separate site and I'll supply the address to anybody who e-mails me requesting it.

Congratulations on a successful Hunt, Would like to see the pictures when you get them. I love pig hunting more than anything in the world. The only pig hunting here in NM is south about to the border of Mexico and right now is not a good time with all the trouble they are having with the wets So i guess if i'm going to do any pig hunting its going to be in Texas.. Again congrts on you hunt and enjoy the meat......Joe......

Tad, I wanted in the worst of ways to take a hog with my Anaconda but my aim just ain't good enough to count on making a hit at anything over 50 yards (max) so I opted for the '06 and for all practical purposes it was a sure thing.  On the first night out I passed on 4 or 5 pigs in the 30 to 40 lb. range (Anaconda in hand) 'cuz I just KNEW the next one out of that bush was gonna be a big one but evidently the kids went one way and the mamas and the papas went another.  The guide said my 336 gr. WLN cast bullet was just the medicine for porkers and he too wanted me to get one of them grunters with the 44 but it just was not to be.

Dusty,

Looks like you slammed him a good one but you still get a pretty good mess of meat, What do they feed on  where you got this one ? are there any crops in that area, I don't have a clue about that country. i am guessing there are irrigation projects there. Any way nice pig. Regards ............Joe..........

Oso, there were barley fields nearby for them to feed on.  Given that I've got high hopes that the flavor will be pretty good.  Only time will tell.

Today I picked up the meat at the locker.  The gal running the place said this pig did not have a strong smell like many wild pigs do, SO, there's hope this meat will be tastey.  Man, we got a lot of sausage it eat!!

As a matter of fact I just got up from the breakfast table where I did in fact eat some of that sausage and YUMMMMMMMMM!  It does not have much fat in it and the flavor is really good.  What more could a guy ask for?! :)

Oh DOGGONE IT Griz!  GEEZE!  Did ya just HAVE to rip the cover off like that?!  Actually, there was a VERY good reason to use the '06.  You see, well................uh, the truth is I probably couldn't of made the shot with my FA 454.  It's just darned tough to have to admit such a thing in front of all these two hundred yard hotshots here but that's the unvarnished truth of the matter and I'd just as well be up front with it and take all the shame that goes with it  I promise to do better next time!

:cb2: Well if
I had a Freedom Arms revolver, and I wuz just 85 yards away . . . I'd have to use a .30-30 cuz I don't have a .30-06. Embarrassing some times to grow old.
