Is it just me, or is the currant chevy sale not all its cracked up to be?  I checked out anew silverado ex cab a few months ago, and it seems to me I could have gotten it for about the same price then? I wish I would have kept all the paperwork to tell for sure :? . It just don't seem like the dicount is really that much bigger. Maybe I'm wrong. I do know my truck apparently lost about $3500 in trade in value in these last couple months for some strange reason :x .  I like the trucks, just wish I could do an honest, straightforward deal without all the games.

wipartimer,

Gm employee discount on a new vehicle is on average 15% off the base vehicle, and 18% off the options. A good wheeler-dealer can match these prices easily. I don't bother using it anymore because I buy one year old short term leased vehicles or executive (aka Pep) cars.  The exec. cars are given to GM exec's from level 8 to unclassified. These will only have 3-5,000 miles on them, and are deeply discounted to employee's/retiree's only, no sales to the public. Some large dealships get to buy them from time to time and those are the marked down one to two year old cars you see advertized in the papers.

I recently purchased a 4x4 GMC "work truck"....pretty much stripped down. I went price checking for the same truck, only in the Chevy line and found that I would have to pay over $900 more with the "discount" than I did a few months back without it.

WOW! That sounds like a REAL bargain. G.M gives you an "Employees" discount and you are allowed to pay MORE. Can't wait for Monday so I can go buy a new truck.

Seemed like a fair deal to me. I bought a truck equipped exactly like the last one I bought in "01 and it cost $1,000 less than the last one cost. Can't complain.

I see it as a gimic.  Any discount over and above what you would have gotten before this offer, will be erroded by them allowing you less for your trade vehicle.  It's all a game to steal your truck and get you to pay dearly for their new one.  You have crap, they have gold.  It's always been that way, always will be.   Go armed with data on your trade vehicle and the vehicle that you are shopping to buy.  Get data from Edmunds, Kelly and NADA.  The sales people are a little off guard when they see that you have done the home work required and will not be allowed to become a victim of their age old game of fleecing the public.
It it hurts when you do that then don't do that.

I traded my '98 Dakota for a 4 door Silverado. I feel I got a good deal. We financed the truck through our credit union and saved $11k on the deal overall. I now wonder if GM is making big $$$ by financing the vehicles.

Just remember, if a company is advertising the hell out of something, they are making lots 'o moola. Cell phones, calling cards, car leases sound familiar? I figure Chevy changed what they call the "employee discount" to real employees right before they announced the program. Everybody else has an employee discount program now so it dilutes the definition of what a true discount is in my opinion. I guess it equates to the "invoice prices" of the past.

I bought a new gmc 1500 crew cab z71 with the employee discount. The sticker on my truck was $35390. The price I paid for the truck before tax was $27,314. In my mind this was a pretty good deal. I didn't have to spend 3 hours at the dealership to negotiate this price. There was no stress no aggrivation no wondering if I've gotten all I could out of them. It was actually fun.  Like it should be.

I actually got more for my trade than I was offered a year previous from other dealerships.

Is GM making money? Of course they are, you think the price they give to their employees loses them money? no way. The are making smaller amounts with larger volume, and best for them they are actually moving vehicles. Which is something they've been struggling to do prior to this.

You'll not convince me this is a bad deal, maybe it's not an extreme previously unreachable price but it is better than msrp.

I work with many car dealers, and regardless of make, they have seen a large increase in sales. Many of my GM dealers, a very low on inventory now.

Those of you looking at GMC and Chevy, might be interested to know, that because of the higher standard equipment level on a GMC, that if you are looking at a “loaded” truck the GMC will list slightly less than a Chevy that is optioned up to the same equipment level.  If you are looking at base level truck the Chevy will list for less.

As most will be trading a vehicle in, be aware of the value of your trade.  Having worked with dealers for almost 30 years, I can tell you they are relying on your emotion of “wanting”, just remember the dealer “needs” to sell the vehicle, so if you can “walk away” your trade can increase in value.

Another thing some may find of interest is, that because of accounting methods, few dealers actual show new vehicle sales as a profit center.  Also if you examine GM’s financials, the most profitable entity is GMAC, their financial operations, not only does GMAC make your loan they also finance and insure most GM dealers inventories, and quite a few of the dealership facilities.

I bought the GMC extended cab, 4x4,  with the Z71 package.  I sold my trade in for more then twice the price offered by the dealer.  The 2005 cost less then a thousand dollars more then my 95 model Extended cab with the Z71 package.  Considering inflation it was a great deal.

If you are expecting a "free cheese"  give-away program you need to look under another rock.  There is a huge profit margin in the sale of pickup's.  GM has reduced the margin, not erased it.

The dealer is going try and make a profit off of your trade in by low balling you.  He is not concerned about you selling your old rig.  The used pickup market is full as far as dealers are concerned.  Local lots and back lots are over flowing with used 4x4 pickups.  Mexican import laws are more liberal regarding "used" pickup imports.  Dealers in Mexico are buying used State side pickups and making profits om them.  This is a blessing for US dealers.

As soon as I told my neighbor that my pickup was for sale he and his wife was hugging it.  They immediately arranged a loan with their credit union, and the money is now in my account.  My dog is confused.  His "pickup" is in the wrong yard.

He needs to get use to "his" new hunting rig with all the updated bells and whistles.  Of course with the price of gas I might have to bronze it, and pour a cement base in the front yard.

Yeah, I got into an argument with a Chevy dealer not too long ago about the employee discount plan.  I get the Union Pacific X-Plan on General Motors (including Cadillac, etc, etc.) Chrysler/dodge, NissanInfinity, Subaru, FoMoCo, etc.  The discount amounts to 1% below invoice plus all discounts and incentives.  I showed this guy that I got a better deal than he was showing me.  All he kept saying was .."You don't need the railroad discount.." over and over again."  Sure, fella...I have the same abilities to login to the corporate website also.  Dealers, for the most part, fire me up.
