Rubber gloves or
« on: June 19, 2005, 06:46:34 PM »
I helped skin and flesh about 5 bears this spring.  Somewhere along the line I must have nicked myself.  About day 7-10 the swelling started and I did some home treatment.  I had to attend a welding class so headed to Wasilla AK and started the class.  On Tuesday night last week the thumb swelled to 1 1/2 times, started turning blue in parts, throbbed and got a little nasty.  I opted to miss some class and see the doctor.  X-rays, 4 shots of a pain killer, lancing the thumb, a slide of the infection, medication and $540 latter I was out the door. Hot soapy soaking every few hours, medication that has to be taken after food (if not you'll vomit, been there).

It is Sunday now and the blue has at least changed to red again.  The swelling is moving down and towards the lower part of the hand now.  If in the morning there is no change for the better it will be another doctor in Valdez tomorrow.

Wear rubber gloves guys.

Knowen guys that insisted on wearing rubber gloves always.  One guy still nicked himself right through the rubber glove.  He ended up with the same thing, bacteria was on the knife blade, and the rubber glove will not protect if it is pierced.  Good Luck, Hope you are better soon.  Rog

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

maybe I should change my ways

yuk that sounds bad Dave.  Hope you get better fast.

Maybe I should change my ways.  I've been fortunate to never have a problem - yet.  Just finished netting and processing 15 salmon.  I've been fortunate there too and never had fish poison but I've seen guys with it - not fun at all.

I've been reluctant to try rubber gloves but at my most recent first aid class I noticed the newer gloves are pretty good and readily available. Thanks for the warning and reminder.

The thumb is better now.  It took three days of IV injections every 12 hours and now I am on penicillin for 2 weeks 4 times a day.  Thumb is all winkled from the swelling so much.

But I bought a Honda Foreman as a reward for my good behavior so I am out again.  :D

Good to hear you're improving Dave.  Handled about 30 salmon tonight, 10-12 kings in the 15-40 lb ranges, rest were big reds and a couple big chums.  Took a friend and his 9 yr old kid out (first time for the kid) to work the net.  Kid had a great time and I told him he was our good luck.  Couldn't get him to wrassle those big kings though.  They'd hit the net so hard you'd think we'd caught a submarine.  Yank the boat around and sink the corks.

Washed my hands with some of that Purell stuff tonight - wow what a wake up!  Didn't realize I had so many cuts!

Hey that's quite a program Dave.  Survive a wound and get a reward.

I need a new outboard.  How'm I gonna earn it?  Somehow I don't see the wifey saying "Oh hon, your finger's all messed up, why don't you go get that new Yamaha 40 you've been wanting."  Well she did say tonight, hey if you want to go upriver this week, GO.  Take the oldest and GO.  That's not bad at all.  And I didn't have to get wounded either.

Well stay on the meds Dave just like the DR ordered and hopefully all is well.  I salute your support of our service men.  By taking those 2 guys out I bet you encourage many others just to hear / read the story.  Good on you.  happy 4th.

The IV came out last Thursday.  I am still on 2,000 mg of penicillan a day for a week or more yet.

It really lets you know that you screwed up when the doctor says I was glad we could save it.

The Foreman will be used for hunting and prospecting.  Matter of fact I feel a road trip coming on right now.  OH, that hurts but someone has to prospect for gold.

Thanks for the well wishes guys. :D
