Hi All,
I went to the range with my 7000. It sports a Simmons WTC 6.5-20 scope. I leave it set at 20 power. My first group at 75 yds. was a wonderful cloverleaf of 6 shots low and left. I adjusted the scope and my grouping went to pieces. Sometimes I could get two or three to group well, the balance of the ten would print all over the place. Checked the scope and mounts, all seem tight. My mounts did originally slip until I put gel glue on the rear of both the front and back mounts. I was testing different ammo types. Even upon return to the original type, Federal Bulk, lousy groupings. Any thoughts as to what needs correction. Thank you.

Well first off, what was you shooting from?

Was you shooting from a bench and the gun in a rifle rest or what? In other words, what was keeping your rifle steady?

Second of all, did you try a different scope?

I will add further info based on your responses.

thanks,

KW

Hi KW,
I do shoot off a bench using a short bipod. I didn't try another scope. Since there are so many variables in rimfires, I thought I would try another day and see if I could eliminate them one by one. I was suspecting the scope and it's internal adjustments. Haven't ruled that out yet. Maybe eye position. Maybe ammunition that I have modified with a larger hollowpoint I put in a jig and open up the cavity so the round is more effective. Just not sure yet, that's why I was asking for suggestions. Thank you.

TJ,

Well I think we have narrowed your problem down real quick. More than likely it is you modifying your ammo, making the hollow point larger.

I know many folks have done this over the years and for what reason I will never know. Please let me explain.

First, killing any animal is simply about shot placement. I do not care how big a hollow point is or how fast a bullet is running, you have to have proper bullet placement for a clean swift kill.

Secondly, a larger hollow point will not kill any quicker than a standard hollow point. It is not the size or shape of the bullet, it is shot placement.

Third, modifying a bullet will make a difference in how a bullet or round groups. You are taking a uniformity bullet and now making a bullet non-uniformed. Remember the bullets are made off or out of high cost machinery so they come out uniformed. Is each bullet 100 percent perfect? Absolutely not, but they will be closer to anything done or made by hand.

In closing, don't modify bullets. You are only wasting your time.

Just my opinion.nothing personal.

Take care and good luck shooting.

Hi KW,
You may have nailed it on the head, or the bullet point, so to speak. I'm going to buy some ammo and not modify it to see what will happen. Thanks for your wise counsel, it's appreciated.
