Mom was picked for a moose permit
« on: June 20, 2005, 12:25:01 PM »
I checked the mail this afternoon and there was an official letter from the State of New Hampshire. Sure enough, she was picked for zone A2 in the Granite state for either sex.

We're all elated. I remember checking earlier and I guess they did not have all the names on the list at the NH website.

Being her sub permittee, she is going to have me shoot the moose. So I will be getting a chance at another handgun moose this year. I'll be using the TC Contender with the 14" .375 JDJ. The .375 Winchester barrel that she gave me as a gift almost ten years ago is being rechambered now.

This will be a tough hunt in that the law states I have to be in sight of mom. She has some medical issues and cannot really do much walking. She'll be able to sitr in the truck and possibly get out of the vehicle and go 100 feet or so. I spoke with the guide and he said we will have to get up early, like 3 AM and get ahead of the other hunters. This zone has a lot of hunters( 90) and most will be road hunting. We will not be alone like the last time in Zone B where we had access to a chunk of private land.

We're all planning to get into shape for this event. I plan to drop a good 30 pounds for the summer and I will spend at least three days a week at the rifle range shooting the Contender. I'll shoot the 22 WRM 14" since it will balance as the .375 JDJ should.

Anyways. This is some excellent news. I was a bit down in the dumps wondering what we'll do this fall for a big hunt. It looks like a handgun moose will be in order.I hope

Bigbore,
Congratulations...

Have you thought of using something to transport your Mom into the woods?  I was initially thinking of an ATV but that might not be practical.

The Great North Woods of NH are pretty much open to all hunting. The main issue is that many roads are gated so you can'r drive down them. So even with an ATV, that would be a problem. I got the impression that there are a few roads that you can travel on and hunt off.

My mother had her ankle fused, she has back problems as well as some heart issues and diabetes. So she can't really walk more than 100 feet from the truck at best.

My wife & I bird hunt that area..The moose are thick & the roads are good..If you are paying a guide it is a lead pipe cinch...If for any reason you cant do that hunt please see if that tag is transferable..I'd pay your mom for it..I built my wife a 35 whelen just for that reason...You are going to have nothing but a good time..The area is great. good people good food, clean rooms.. The roads are decent..I wish I could draw that tag in that exact area...A 2 is prime cover & lots of it..The largest moose taken up there came from a little place we bird hunt down in an area known as Garfield falls..I think it is about 18 miles from our camp on rt three...The main rd east to maine is called magalloway.. Straight out east turn right at the maine border..go south a bit Dont cross over the river {thats maine} bear left in the fork past the parking area for the upper falls..The big bad boy was shot down there..I have his picture..when he was alive..There are so many good spots in that area [a 2] you will see plenty of moose..& you have an either sex tag..If you go just over the Ct river on magalloway rd. turn left & head up into the area behind second lake.. Use any of those roads up there.. The first right turn behind an iron gate all the way up in the back past all the cutting is good...or the second or third left turns if you want to just go driving around...plenty of space...plenty of good cover..bring your shotgun the partridge hunting is really good most years up there.it would take a week to drive all the roads in that area....mike in ct

Mom will be making it. She put my name as a subpermittee so I will be doing the shooting. We chatted with  our guide and it looks good so far.
