Ruger Model 10/22-TAL race gun
« on: June 20, 2005, 08:55:49 PM »
I just got this baby. Beautiful, and sublimely accurate. She's a dream to shoot, positively orgasmic. 3-lb short-pull trigger group, chestnut thumb-through stock (laminated), heavy-guage hammer-forged barrel that catches the light like carbon fibre on a car.

What I'm wondering is, does anyone else have one? If so, care to compare notes on ammunition and such? Also, is anyone certain of precisely how many were made? The most believable I've heard was 1500, as mine is #1435. I've also heard 500, but that can't be right.

I'm pretty sure the exact number is 1500. I've seen this number in a few places.
As far as ammunition goes, I'd just buy a bunch of brands/types to see what YOUR 10/22 likes. In my experience, every one is a little different. The Race Rifle has the same action as the standard 10/22, but with a lighter trigger. I'm not sure if the Race Rifle barrel has a Sporter chamber or a Bentz chamber. The Sporter is what comes on the standard rifles. The Bentz chamber is a little tighter, thus making some bulk ammo feed unreliably. I'm pretty sure the Race Rifle has the Bentz. My Green Mountain barrel has a Bentz chamber and it really likes the American Eagle standard velocity .22lr ammo, plus it's accurate. Some of the cheap bulk stuff jams every now and then, but for the most part it's reliable.
I really like the feel of the Race Rifle. It just feels nice in your hands. Post some pics if you can!

There were 1500 of this model made for the TALO distributors group.  It's the Ruger "Race Rifle" as it's marketed but is a listed by Ruger as the 10/22TAL Model 1166.  It's simply a 10/22T with a variation of the Barracuda stock having a Ruger emblem in the grip cap.  The serial number range is RRR001-RRR1500. Suggested retail was $489.00 but most I've seen have been in the $380-$420 range.
If one is bought this for collectabilty and any future investment, don't shoot it as with it being so prevalant for "special editions" to get made now, unless it's N-unfired-IB, it's just a shooter.
Head to Rugerforum.com or rimfirecentral.com and there's plenty of threads on these.

As for ammo, best bet is to try a bunch of bifferent brands, styles, weights to see what your particualr one prefers.  Same two models can shoot the same ammo differently.
