I think for the money the Marlin will be hard to beat. Just my opinion.

It has just come to my attention that CZ is now making rifles in this caliber. Ya might wanna check them out. Likely to be between the Ruger and Marlin in price and above both in quality and likely more accurate than the Marlin and everything is more accurate than the Ruger. Every test I've seen in the magazines on them puts Ruger dead last for accuracy and most show it barely suitable for any chore you'd want to use the round for.

Sorry Ruger fans them ain't my numbers just reporting what the magazines are showing and with Ruger the single largest source of revenue for the magazines there is no way they are not giving them every benefit of a doubt they can.

My $165 Savage with the compressed-Hefty-bags stock shoots well under a minute BUT the trigger is so crunchy that I occasionally launch one two minutes out. Oh well. Ya pays yer money an ya takes yer choice.

If ammo would come down, 17HMR would obsolete much of my inventory, I'm afraid. The advantages are many.

Buy one! Then buy as much ammo as you can carry! Then try to find a Dewey .17 cal cleaning rod! :grin:

I'd look for the Otis Tactical Model Cleaning Kit. It has the .177 cal. cleaning cable and attachments. I own that kit and the only minus I have experienced with it is it won't get into a .177 cal. Crossman Air gun chamber that I have. It will go all the way up to 12 gauge!. Just theticket to take with you to the range.

That Otis rig sounds like a winner! I'm not about to take my Dewey rods out of their sterile operating room environment, so the Otis sounds like something I oughta have in my truck anyway.

The Beeman's rods that I salvaged out of my airgun kit work passably, as does the monofilament pull-thru trick BUUUTTTT..... Sounds like I need an Otis too.

The trigger on the savage is easy to fix. I agree the trigger feels to me like it has sand in it. Rifle Basix makes a drop in trigger that is excellent. In my opinion the Savage is one of the best buys in rifles around. Jus my 2 cents worth.

I have never shot one I prefer my 22 mag at the moment but that is my likes at the moment. The guys I have talked to that like them think they are great. The ammo is expensive at this time but I am sure it will go down when others besides Hornady makes it. All of the rifles I have seen are nice some may need a trigger job to be ultra accurate but then that is not just limited to the 17 rimfire. In this day of the lawyers and people ready to sue at the drop of a hat lousy triggers seem to be the rule. From the guys that I have talked to they like them so if a 17 seems to be your cup of tea go for it. I have never met a gun I did not like at least a little bit

Don't forget the Remington 597 in 17 HMR. I recently picked one up on sale for $289 in the 597 LS version. I've fired a few rounds and it appears to be quite accurate. As soon as the weather cooperates, I'll try it at 100 yards. I've also purchased a 22 Mag barrel for it, so I'll have two rimfire magnums when the other barrel arrives. :-) MI VHNTR

If they had, had at least a 30gr bullet out and the ammo cost was better I might well have bought that over the 22 mag I just got. I'm fairly sure ammo will come down to 22mag levels sometime but not untill all the other makers get in. At least Rem, Win, Federal and CCI. I don't know if they can even put 30 or 40 gr bullets in them. I don't see why not but it would hurt muzzle velocity. However down range it would pass up the 22wmr in the same weight. Light (and 17gr is LIGHT) bullets are for LIGHT critters. I watched more than a few 1200 or so pound steers dropped with one shot 22mag. Course had they been shot in the body they would've prolly took a half a box and 15 minutes to expire. That is IF the corral held!!

There's a 17 hrm forum over at www.rimfirecentral.com there are a few guys there that have shot their 17 hrm quite a bit.

I bought a 17 Cal.CZ 452 American today,they were sold out of ammo. I hope more companys start to make it! Can't try it untill the next shipment comes in from Hornady.....D.P.

D pete, that is why I do not have one and bought a 22 mag I know I can get ammo for that about anywhere and a heck of a lot cheaper. I may be wrong on this but Hornady has a winner as far as the ammo goes and though I have heard rumors of others making it I have not seen any to date with the Hornady ammo scarce. Hornady must have a combo that the others cannot reproduce yet or they would have by now it did not take long for the guns to come out so why just hornady ammo? think about it the other companies if theuy made ammo for it that was as good as the Hornady it would have came out by now just like the guns. jh45gun, You're right, I bought the gun mainly for fun can't have much fun without bullets! Maybe there was some kind of patent involved.I have 3 .22s and bought the .17 for occasional use. The gun shop says ammo won't be a problem in the future but of course they're in the business of selling guns! Have to wait and see...D.P.

I hear CCI is also making the round but that does'nt mean one can buy any at this time. I've been told the ammo is a month away and then to be rationed.

I was told by a local retailer that Hornaday "released it" the 17hmr ammo rights that is. I see Remington has 17 ammo listed on their website but haven't seen any at any online shooting supply sites yet. SOON though. I read that CCI furnished the cases to Hornaday for the 17. Which will mean Federal will be out soon too. I want to see heavier, harder bullets in the thing. Then there is Winchester!

I can see wanting tougher bullets but adding more weight will just put it back into the realm of the 22 mag. Heavier bullets will just slow down the velocity to where the 22 mag is with their lighter bullets and I would guess not be as effective. Jim

HELLO. Jim I can chat here bout shootin but I think I'll be doing a bit mer ice fishin than shootin. Anyway, the 17 in a 30 or 35 grain would have the muzzle specs as the 22mag sure enough but would buck wind a teeny, teeny bit better and would have better down range speed and be a hair flatter. OK well when I say hair Ah mean hair__________
