forearm problem in my contender
« on: February 20, 2003, 01:31:09 AM »
I have a 24"  223 bull barrel that I have trouble getting consistent groups.  When I first got my barrel it shot excellent groups.  I swapped barrels and swapped back and the same load went wild, I gave up for a day or two and put the 223 barrel back on and am now back to my excellent groups.  What could be my problem?  Thanks.

Probably the stupid fore end. Free float it.

You mentioned a forearm problem?

What was up with that?  Were there extreme differences in temperature?  Did you clean the barrel?  Sounds weird.  Another thing I have thought about before is barometric pressures, even though the temperature is close to the same, a weather fron moving in could cause differences, but I would think that would be very small, but it could be as dramatic as shooting at sea level and then shooting up in the mountains.
....make it count

If you don't tighten the forend with the same tension every time, you'll get different groups

My first guess, would be to follow what GB is telling you. These things can act up just like a bolt action rifle does when not properly free floated.

I loosened my forearm screws to where the forearm is loose on the barrel.  When I do this it shoots like its supposed to.  Now to figure out where my trouble is.   How do you maintain the same forearm screw tension, I do a lot of swapping barrels?  I'm going to try sanding some more out of the barrel channel and my forearm is also snug against receiver.  Thanks for the help.

That could be a big problem right there. The forarm is not supposed to touch the sides of the reciever.  KN
