Hello. I need to scope a S&W 629 classic. I cant see well enough at my age to use the sights past 25 yards or so. I have used a Bushnel Holosight
in the past. Loved it but dont like the price. I see lots of less expensive red dot type units out there. Do any of you use them on your big bore handguns? What would you recomemd???

I have an Ultra-dot on my S&W 500MAG. I have well over 2000 rounds on that one red-dot. I also have a millet on a Super Redhawk 44 MAG and one on my Super Redhawk 454 Casull. Lots of rounds fired and no problems.

So I recommend the Ultra-Dot and the Millet.

You can't beat a testimony like Redhawk1's. That's a lot of pounding on a sight. I mounted a Trijicon reflex sight on my S&W 629 and I like it. I will say if I had to do it over I would look at the Doctor dot sight because they are so small and light. IMHO a standard holster could be modified to carry a handgun with one mounted on it since they are so small.

I've had a Millet 30mm red dot on my .44 SBH Hunter for 9years now and haven't had to resight it since I changed my load 7 years ago. I just stick in a new battery each fall and it's good to go. Midsouth Shooters has them for $78.00. Given my experience I'd still buy them at twice the price.

How well can you see in low light with the millet red dot? Would it be ok to use early morning and late evening when it is almost dark? I know the dot would show up but could you make out your target in low light? I read a story where a shooter could not make out a hog at 30 yards when it was almost dark. I have been seriously thinking about the millet. The other red dot I have been thinking about is the Gilmore. I enjoy knowing what your experiences are with these types of scopes. I listen very closely to what you say about them. Cheaper to listen than to buy them and realize they dont really work as you need them to. Thanks.

Nebraska Kelly, If I had to choose between the 2, Ultra-dot and Millet. I would go with the ultra dot. I did blow out a Millet on my 500 MAG, and Millet replaced it. But the Ultra-Dot has not fail me yet. Now on the lesser recoil guns , such as the 44 MAG and 454 Casull the Millet works just fine.
