I bought a used .243 handi (synthetic) from a coworker.   I was not pleased with the groups and decided to try a .270 barrel.   After paying for the barrel and fitting, I have now had it out twice with a new Bushnell Elite.

After sighting it in at 25 yards and then moving to 100, it hit exactly high at 1 inch.    I was pumped.   Then my next shot missed the paper.   I was disgusted enough to quit.    I tried another brand of ammo and hit 15 inches high.

I have decided to remount the bases, rings and scope, but if I can't gain some confidence soon with this little gun, someone else can have it and I will go back to a bolt.  

My range time is extremely limited, so perhaps this might be a gun for someone who can shoot more often.   It is a shame because I wanted to use this .270 as my deer rifle this year.

Do you still have the 243 barrel? What contour was/is it? If you still have it i might be interested in it.

Nope.        I think it was the wrong twist personally.   Seemed to do better with 80's and I wanted to shoot the 100's.

Peepaw, sounds like ya got a bad scope/bad mounting or both if both barrels do the same thing, I'd put a different scope on it and see what happens. If you look at the accuracy poll, you'll see that no Handi shoots that bad, there's got to be some other reason for the way it's shooting. I'd put the scope at the top of the list of things to check with what little info you've shared so far....

Something ain't quite right there...I would say the scope-rings-mounts...first...then ask all  of the usual questions afterwards...PeePaw...what all have you done to your barrels...have you looked in the FAQ stickey at the top of the forum...and used the search feature on the top of the page??? There is a ton of info at your disposal to sort thru...and you might want to access it ...and see if there is somethere that can help...

Peepaw, is it an Ultra Comp .270 barrel? If all else fails and you still want to sell it please keep me in mind..Thanks and good luck....<><.... :grin:

I admit I have not done much to this gun and barrel except clean it and then start shooting.    But I have changed scopes to a Bushnell Elite.

The experienced shooter that did own the .243 was not impressed with the accuracy of that barrel.   He reloads and learned to live with acceptable accuracy until he sold it to me cheap.

I have studied the various FAQ's and the basic tips, but have tired of the game.    I would love to spend more time tuning up this little gun, but I have other guns that shot  more accurately out of the box and I am very short of time these days.     Also, my knowledge of gun bedding is "0".  I have considered a new wood stock, but will not unless this barrel proves it is worth the cost and trouble.

I understand the barrels tend to shoot better with more shots and I have only fired about 40-50 rounds.

Ordered the rings from the Optic Zone as suggested.   Very polite and should be here soon.   I figured I would start with rings and they try all the other fixes.   I really want to use this .270 this year, but won't until I get my confidence up with it.

Pewpaw,

I would also take off the base and use loc tight (blue) and put base back on to make sure its solid. If both barrels are doing this for you I don't belive the barrels are the cause. Also free floating is real easy ( see faqs) Lots of good people here to help so hang in there.

If you have a hammer extension on the rifle I suggest you remove it and see if this improves matters. A hammer extension increases lock time and gives the transfer bar more time to slide down if the trigger pull isn't done just right. You'll find all kinds of warnings in this forum about the need to pull the trigger all the way back to ensure that the transfer bar stays up. Increasing the lock time by mounting a hammer extension just makes the system more sensitive to proper trigger pull.

NEF has acknowledged that if the transfer bar falls too soon it may receive a lesser impact from the hammer and  primer ignition can be adversely affected leading to significant reduction in muzzle velocity. ie. shots that miss the paper!!!

i had a .223 that shot .5 inch or better groups, i got a .308 and it did 1 inch high at 100 yards which was ok but every other shot would be 4 or 5 inches off, i think its just nefs quality control.
