A 17-year-old is in stable but critical condition at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital after being shot in the chest Saturday afternoon at a Faultline Avenue residence off Badger Road.
Alaska State Troopers responded to Fairbanks Memorial after the seriously wounded male juvenile arrived. He had been transported to the hospital by two friends in a private vehicle.
Trooper investigator Jeremy Rupe said the shooting occurred while the youth and two friends were preparing to go to an area shooting range. Another 17-year-old male juvenile had just opened a gun safe and was taking the first weapon out, a loaded semi-automatic 9 mm carbine, when he turned and the gun discharged, shooting his friend. A female juvenile in another room at the time of the shooting responded to help take their wounded friend to the hospital.
The juvenile removing the gun told troopers the shooting was unintentional.
Rupe said there was no indication of fighting, alcohol or drugs at the time of the shooting.
The wounded teen remains at the Fairbanks Memorial Hospital in stable but critical condition. The trooper investigation is continuing.
