Hello all! I have a savage 99F from the late 50's. It is in 308 caliber.

The 260 is my favorite round, and would like a lever action in this caliber. Who would be a good gunsmith to work on a savage99. I am assuming it
would require only a rebarrel, chamber and headspacing work.

Ray Montgomery has a good reputation for work on 99s. I think he trades as Ray's gunsmithing. He advertises in SGN.

Note that due to the relatively high chamber pressures of the .260 you should only use actions made to handle the .308 and later similar cartridges. Early M99s were prone to action flex and case stretching with high pressure .250 and .300 loads so the actions were changed when the .308 was introduced. I don't know the exact date that the receivers were strengthened, but it was around 1955. I'm sure that Savage experts will chime in with a definate date and serial number range.

Thanks all for the info. Lonestar this gun was originally chambered in 308, thats why I thought it would be a good canadiate for this project. Regards, Byron
