More Kudos to H&R!!!
« on: June 27, 2005, 01:24:07 PM »
Got my replacement stock for the BC today and it's a nice one, lots of figure in the wood this time!!! Gotta thank H&R for replacing a stock damaged when fitting a barrel, they would have sent it sooner if they had one in stock, but had to wait for the next batch to be made. I think they made up for the inconvenience by sending one that is above average....Thanks H&R!!! And I have plans for the broken stock too, sorry MSP.

That is a very nice looking stock Quick. Looks like H&R made it right with you. I know sometimes things can happen and its not a perfect world, but its nice to see a company come through. Again nice looking stock.

And sometimes they do not get it right!! Had three rifles returned today. Of the three, two have nicks and scratches in the bluing that was not there when I shipped them out. And some of that is on the new 45-70 BC barrel just fitted. One of the buttstocks (brown laminate) I shipped back had a chip out of the wrist right at the wood to metal line. I asked them to replace the buttstock, and they did. With a different style buttstock (Pallet wood). Now of course my buttstock and forearm do not match.

I don't think these people have a clue what quality work means. They will never be is the same class as the other American rifle makers. Just because they sell a less expensive rifle is no reaseon they have to supply such shoddy support. I have a friend on GBO who can not understand my interest in these rifles. I'm beginning to wonder too!!

Thanks Norse and Deadeye!!

Wally, sorry to hear of their poor treatment of your rifles, you'd think they could be more careful with our firearms when they're handling them. I'll not send another nice stock in with a barrel for fitting anymore, I shoulda listened to Deadeye, he was right as usual. FWIW, they will reblue for a real reasonable price, and I think they should do yours for free.....if you think you want to risk further damage.....makes ya wonder, doesn't it!! :?

Thanks, I agree. I am thinking about sending the B.C barrel back to be reblued.

Gosh and I want to get more barrels ...........should I keep the stock and the fore end at home?   Think they would want to save money and grief  for replacing stocks and forends....I don't understand this, just shouldn't be.

Norse, as had been recommended by those before me and Deadeye in particular, send em a plain pallet wood stock if you have one instead of a nice stock like a BC or laminated stock. They say they won't test fire the new barrel if there is no stock included. The benefit of sending no stock at all is the shipping to them is a lot less. I don't know if there is any merit in them test firing it, they probably don't make sure that it shoots good, just that it is safe to shoot. Kufford's new stainless 30-06 wouldn't chamber a factory round so ya know it wasn't test fired, FWIW!!!

I think I understand it. They are too cheap to install a working quality control program. I think they have enough customers who feel that since they are purchasing an inexpensive rifle, they will accept all the little screw-ups. If every customer would call/bitch/demand problems be fixed, maybe they would realize the cost effectiveness of doing things right the first time.

Quick:

You have to be right about checking for accuracy. How did the 204 with only half the barrel rifled get out the door? If they test fire, its just at a back stop. Some have gotten test targets back, but I'll bet those were only on rifles where customers had questioned a rifles accuracy.

You are right Wally,
I am going to call them and ask for a tech tomorrow and tell them I want to order more barrels, but I am going to hold off because I have some concerns. Then I will explain why I have  them . I know I am only one person.  I hope your barrels shoot good.

Good to hear they treated you well Tim, but like you in another thread I have to ask....."Why can't they get it right the first time???????" Better yet, "Why would they ship back a stock that they damaged?????" It would have been far better to have heard that when you got your gun back, it had a new stock and the chipped stock and a letter of explaination and apology. Instead you have to call and complain about a problem they created. I expect a milsurp rifle to have the S%*T kicked out of the stock...every idiot in the infantry and armory had a chance to knock it about. But a private individuals rifle???? Give me a break. Again, glad to hear they have treearted you well on it.

Well, I think the reason they didn't fix it before they shipped it back to me was they didn't have any BC stocks available, had to wait for them to make one....but they could have mentioned it and included a note that indicated they would send a replacement when available. It just seems that they don't have any QC checks in place to take care of things like that, maybe Diana Lynch can wake em up and get things on track. I don't think it would take much to keep a problem like this from happening as frequently as it apparently does.

Glad to see they made this right for you Quick. That is one of the best looking stocks i've seen on an H&R.

Mt3030, sorry to hear of your troubles. I'd send the barrel back to them and have them re-blue it for FREE. There is no reason that all of this should take place.

Talked with customer service just now. Mystery solved on why they sent a different style stock back. They are no longer using the brown laminated stocks. They stated no one liked then so were dropping them. Going back to the pallet wood. Bummer for me, I perfered the lamminated brown stocks. (I suspect the laminates were more expensive)

Decided that if had them reblue the barrel, they would ship it back to me loose in a cardboard box again, and just scuff the bluing again. If I decide to reblue I'll have Wayne beadblast and matt blue. I've seen an example of his work already!

Well I called H&R and asked for a tech, but he wasn't available. The lady asked me what I wanted and I said I am thinking of getting more barrels, but since my handi rifles  are fairly new I would like to keep the stocks as original as possible. She said what do you mean???? I said well I know of a couple of people who got damaged rifles back and you guys gave them new stocks which is good I added,  and said " Well sir that hardly ever happens and your rifle should come back in the same shape it came to us" ( she was pretty defensive) I said that may be mam and I like my handi rifles (just the way they are). I just wanted you to know I have a concern because I believe an ounce of prevention can go a long ways. Said she understood and said "well we would replace it if anything should happen".  ... Not sure if it sunk in ....... Norse

I held back as long as I could stand it. I wasn't going to do any rock chunkin' but, about 3 weeks after I bought my .308 ultra and my groups were 5" to 6" at 100yds I sent the thing back for inspection. In the end I found the problem, didn't have the screw on the front of the rail engaged at all! BUT, the target they sent back (5 shots at 100yds. Win. 180 gr.) was about 5/8", the only problem was they weren't from my gun. I thought the holes looked too small, so I pushed a .308 into one RIP! then I pushed a .25-06 bullet in RIP! musta been a .223, I left well enough alone and although my gun is very accurate avg. 1" at 100yds.  they still did me dirty. So yes I too have felt the sting.

Another example of how the Ultra rail offers very few benefits, but introduces a huge possible problem (and apparently somewhat common).    That front screw on the Ultra Rail is an issue just waiting to cause a problem.

I'd stick with the standard rail unless you really think you really need the extra 1" of space to mount your scope (not likely).

I got to jump in here and take up for H&R a little bit. Last year I sent my 357 off for a 45-70 barrel, when I was packing it I put a scratch on the receiver not very noticabe but I knew it. Well to my suprise when it came back the scratch was fixed. 8)
